PUERTO RICKO – A police officer in Puerto Rico has been killed during an attempted robbery in which his father, also an officer, was injured.

Police say 29-year-old Luis Gomez Crespo was shot several times while standing outside a restaurant Friday afternoon in the southern coastal city of Patillas.

Police say he died at the hospital. They say his father, 47-year-old Luis Gomez Rodriguez, was shot once and is recovering. A third man also was injured.

It is unclear what prompted the shooting. No one has been arrested.

Police say 611 people have been reported killed this year, compared to 516 in the same period last year. The island of 4 million people reported its second-worst year for homicides in 2010 with more than 955 deaths.

From the Officer Down Memorial Page:

Agent Luis Gomez-Crespo was shot and killed when he attempted to take action during a robbery while off duty.

Agent Gomez-Crespo, his father, and another officer were in a restaurant while off duty when a man entered and announced a robbery.

When the three identified themselves as officers the man opened fire, striking Agent Gomez-Crespo five times. His father, who also serves with the Puerto Rico Police Department, and the other off duty officer were also shot and wounded.

The suspect turned himself in at a local police station and was charged with one count of murder of a law enforcement officer and two counts of attempted murder.

Agent Luis Gomez-Crespo had served with the Puerto Rico Police Department for four years and was assigned to the South Trujillo Alto Precinct. He is survived by his wife, daughter, and parents.

RIP brother. Prayers go out to his family and friends as well as his LEO father and LEO friend who were also wounded during the robbery. I am pretty sure that the suspect is toast down there in the jails. Too bad one of those three officers were not able to get off a shot and kill the suspect. Be prepared at all times!
