MIAMI BEACH – An 11-year-old boy was taken into custody Thursday afternoon by undercover police officers who caught him on camera breaking into a parked car outside a Toys R Us store, North Miami Beach police said.
The boy, whose name was not released because he is a minor, was charged with vehicle burglary and taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center, according to Maj. Kathy Katerman.
The incident actually began a day earlier when police said store management chased away three young subjects spotted trying car door handles and peering into parked cars at the store at 551 NE 167 St.
On Thursday, a three-person undercover crime suppression team was in place at around 5 p.m. when the 11-year-old was videotaped entering a locked Dodge Caravan. Police said the boy reached inside and took cash and coins from the center console. Officers recorded the incident themselves on hand-held video camera for court evidence before arresting the boy.
The boy has a past burglary record, police said.
The police videotape of the incident will not be released because the boy’s age, Katerman said.
