KINSTON, N.C. (AP) — Authorities say a North Carolina deputy was shot and killed while trying to serve a warrant in a recent killing.

U.S. Marshal Service spokeswoman Nikki Credic said the deputy shot Thursday night in Kinston was part of an agency task force that included local and federal officers.

Nash County Sheriff Dick Jenkins said the victim was a 9-year veteran of the sheriff’s office. The Wilson Daily Times quoted Jenkins as saying that the task force was serving a homicide warrant at a Kinston home when the shooting occurred.

Credic says that some suspects were in custody.

Investigators could be seen going in and out of the taped-off crime scene after the shooting happened.
