Officer Rescues Fawn Trapped In Hole
Fawn and rescuer, Officer Luciano (COURTESY PARAMUS PD)
May 29, 2011
PARAMUS, NJ – Paramus Police Officer Nicholas J. Luciano was on routine patrol when he heard a strange cry, went to check and found a fawn who’d fallen into a hole more than three feet deep. The young animal is in good shape now, thanks to the officer, and about to be released back into its natural habitat.
It was just before midnight this morning when Luciano, checking the Century Road business district, heard the fawn’s cries on the wooded property of 115 West Century Road, Police Chief Christopher Brock told Cliffview Pilot.
The “fawn was unable to exit the hole on its own and appeared extremely weak and in distress,” Brock said, adding that Luciano had no idea how long the small animal had been trapped.
Lying on his stomach, Luciano reached in and grabbed the fawn’s front legs, straighten them and pull the animal closer to the opening in the hole, the chief said.
By then, Officer Paul Siemon and Steven Nepola arrived. As they held onto the fawn, Brock said, Luciano straightened the rear legs — then all three lifted.
Tyco Animal Service, which contracts with the Borough of Paramus for animal services, responded and took the fawn to a rehabilitation facility for further care, the chief told Cliffview Pilot.
The once-frightened animal “will eventually be released back into the wild,” Brock said.
