NEW YORK – An on-duty city cop distraught over a possible breakup with his girlfriend pulled out his gun in front of her and fatally shot himself in the head early Tuesday.

“I love you,” Officer Philip Chlanda told his girlfriend before pulling the trigger on a Manhattan street.

The 29-year-old cop argued with his gal pal after he looked at her Facebook page to see if she was seeing anyone else, said Paul Browne, NYPD’s chief spokesman.

“He was left with the impression that she might leave him,” Browne said.

Chlanda, in uniform and on a meal break, left the apartment on E. 36th St. where he and the girlfriend lived with his parents. The couple walked downstairs and continued their argument on the sidewalk near the cop’s squad car.

As he pulled his service .9mm Glock about 3:20 a.m., the girlfriend ran toward him, but not in time to stop him firing, Browne said.

Chlanda was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, but died.

Browne called it “a sad, tragic incident.”

He said the officer, a 4-year veteran, had “an unblemished record,” with no issues. Chlanda was assigned to the 1st Precinct in Tribeca.

The couple had lived together in a room in his parents’ third floor apartment, he said, and planned to get their own apartment soon. “Nobody saw this coming,” said Browne.

“He was a gentle sort of fellow, very courteous,” said a neighbor, Dr. Rosemary Clemens. “It’s very unsettling. It’s particularly terrible when it’s somebody in the line of duty protecting others. He must have been a very troubled soul. All we can do is hope he’s in a better place.”

God bless his family .... what a terrible selfish act and yes, a permanent solution to a temporary problem - so young too ... my heart goes out to the survivors of this terrible selfish act.

NOTHING and NOBODY is worth losing your life over. If only he would have taken a few seconds, just a slight hesitation... Most people who survive an attempted suicide say they regretted it. Permanent solution to a very temporary problem. God Bless Officer Chlanda and his Family. :(

Another tragic example of cops being too busy protecting others than to protect themselves. I have no words...

I am not going to blame FB for this tragedy. It was just something that he looked at and it could have been a diary or notebook or appointment book in a different time. I am on FB and very glad as I have reconnected with a very large number of my former LEO family and that is something that I hold precious.
It is unfortunate that this young man was unable to maintain a normal relationship and his emotional problems lead to his suicide. It could easily have been something to do with the job and this was just the final straw so to speak. The sad fact is a good young man with his entire life in front of him resorted to suicide.

This is so sad and tragic for the family and for us his other family. While this will never be deemed LOD it is still a family tragedy. Suicide is so much more prevelant in our job then ever before but luckily through programs and awareness it is becoming easier to talk about. I am sure as time goes by little signs will appear that the family will say I should have known that this was coming but sadly those are the signs that are always to hard to see. Please never look at an officer that commits suicide as a bad person just very hurt and lost. I pray now he has found his path.

Horrible that people think things are so bad that taking you own life seems like the only thing to do. RIP brother.

We are losing an estimated one officer a day -- up to 400 a year -- due to suicide. Those of us who are both cops and active in law enforcement ministry outreach are working hard to change this stat. We have Phil's family and colleagues in prayer.
