DETROIT – Police say a 25-year-old Detroit man hired someone to kill his mother, who was fatally shot as she left her apartment complex one morning last month.

Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee Jr. announced at a news conference today that Edward Hicks is expected to be arraigned soon on charges of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, solicitation to commit murder and habitual offender in the death of his mother, 46-year-old Marion Harris.
The shooter in the murder-for-hire plot has been identified, but has not yet been arrested, Godbee said.
Godbee said police have uncovered a possible motive for the killing, but said he could not release details.
According to police, a citizen tip on May 11 led police to Hicks, who was wanted on a probation violation in a drug case, at a home on the city’s east side. The Detroit Fugitive Apprehension Team took Hicks into custody in the 18000 block of Goulburn that day.
Family members for Harris were not at the news conference. Godbee said, “It’s a lot for them to take in at this time.”
