WASHINGTON, DC – Lonnie Rashid Lynn Jr., more commonly known as the rapper “Common”, was invited by First Lady Michelle Obama among other poets to celebrate American poetry and prose on Wednesday, May 11, thedailycaller.com reports.

Lynn’s divisive lyrics about gun violence, shooting police, and even for burning the president (who at the time was George W. Bush), make him a controversial choice for the White House. “Burn a Bush cos for peace he no push no button,” he raps on a YouTube video with more than 800,000 views.

He is also a known supporter of convicted cop killer Mumia Abu-Jamal, according to the examiner.com. Abu-Jamal was a member of the Black Panther Party, and was sentenced in 1981 for killing a Philadelphia police officer.

Coincidentally, President Obama and the rapper/poet Lynn are members of Trinity United Church of Christ, reports the New Hampshire Journal. Additionally, Obama’s presidential campaign in 2008 came under fire when the church’s Reverend Jeremiah Wright made several charged sermons in support of Obama.

“Several of Wright’s sermons caused a firestorm of controversy during the 2008 presidential campaign due to their caustic, racially charged, anti-American tones. One sermon in particular caused Obama a severe headache – the one in which he blamed America for Osama bin Laden’s terrorist attacks. ‘America’s chickens are coming home to roost,’ he said.” – New Hampshire Journal

At the time, Obama defended and then rejected Wright, whereas Lynn came to the reverend’s defense.

Lynn also named his daughter after Assata Shakur, another Black Panther party member. In 1977, Shakur was found guilty of first-degree murder and fled to Cuba after escaping prison, reports the New Hampshire Journal.

At the White House event, Lynn and other artists will participate in an afternoon workshop educating children.

The AP reports that other artists invited to attend are Elizabeth Alexander, Billy Collins, Rita Dove, Kenneth Goldsmith, Alison Knowles, Aimee Mann, and Jill Scott.

I believe we are all entitled to our own opinions.. that is all I will say. Oh yeah, that and don't we need to get back to the topic at hand here?

SIr, ask your Chief and get right with the LEO's on this site. Trust me I do not agree with many LEO's on this site but it is what it is. I respect their opinion and they respect mine, LE or Troll your choice. I have been advised that you may have a law enforcement affiliation, but so does the non-sworn secretary in my office!

Right, you do need to put that info in to be verified, but no where on your profile will that info show unless YOU do it. And as long as you only log in to policelink from your personal computer nothing you say in here can be subponead, its covered under first amendment.

nah, ranger, i did find the form and it asks for my government email, my rank, my agency, my supervisor,etc...
i will however ask my Chief about it. if he says its ok to enter my info then i will do so..

yet, i must in the meantime state that being a LEO doesn't make us any better per se so on an opinion state point it shouldn't make a difference. i am man just like you. respect sir. i used to debrief with that same officer who had to resign years back. we would sit and discuss the last domestic and critique each other. he was a good officer. however, he compromised his profession and had to quit. i still respect him as a man though. getting long winded...part-time time!

SpencerStangz, believe what you like and justify anyway you please but this site is called policelink and oh yeah I have been approached by news media and others who profess to be who they are not! If you are LE then prove it, period! Cops respect Cops no matter their opinion on issues! I don't won't to know or care where you work! All we need to know are you the real deal or a wannabe fake who talks the talk! It's very easy to get verified and will put a lot of crap to bed!

snhadley, my point is that it wouldn't change my or your opinion regardless of what job i work. i'm sure you know people who aren't LEOs and you still respect their opinions. don't take what i said about trash to be a personal attack. i am just saying we must be careful. i could be a defense attorney on this site "trolling" for future reference. i try my best to live peacefully with all mankind. that doesn't mean i gotta agree with them though. read my posts, i am respectful to the upmost.
ranger, i will look into it. although "I" can't say where i work, it relatively easy to find out.

short post...one of the reasons my dept won't let us claim where we work is because if i were to equate arrested people to trash in ANY thread and then SOMEHOW a defense attorney found out, i would be in trouble. although i did forget to take the trash out of my car one night before hitting the streets (we have take home cars) and ran up on an arrest. i didn't put him back there with the trash though. i left the bag on the side of the road and came back for it later. was funny though...short post

SpencerStangz, Get verified through the site! As soon as possible. The process is relatively easy for a LEO! Don't read into what I just said just do it!

no folks, i didn't take a class on PC. we do have in-service every year though. they usually cover ethics every time.
snhadley i think he was speaking about how some folks feel about cops who abuse their power. by no means am i saying its okay to kill corrupt cops. i DO hope they get put out off job before they cause too much damage though. officers that abuse their power sometimes cause more problems them they think. and yes, some folks simply go off what someone else said and form their opinions from there. its called the echo effect. people are more likely to tell about bad service than good service. but if you're gonna take that poem by its words, then take all of them. its starts off by saying "weighs a ton" "i won't run". well the ton line is from another song but you can't deny that he says "no time for that" and tells people to move forward to get the job done.
donnalynn, i'm totally cool agreeing to disagree. however, if everyone had the same view then what would we learn. many a GOOD man/woman has sold their integrity for money. unfortunately sometimes they are LEOs. that is something i'm sure you've heard just like me in ethics classes. that's why we must pass credit checks to become LEOs. i sure didn't become an officer to get rich. my DARE officer made a huge impression on me back in fifth grade. anywho, i don't know Common any more than i know any of you. i do know that he made a post and stated that he did respect and honor LEOs and military. if you believe his words once in the past, why not now? anddddd....the $22 is the minimum. we aren't protecting them anymore than we are protecting the peace at their events. if there is an event at the civic center, regardless if its rascal flatts or young jeezy, we can put in to work it. when there is a video shoot, we block the roads and whatnot. while i have only worked a few (because i value my off-time) I don't think my integrity was at risk. what i did find was that they aren't always what they say they are. a famous country singer was a womanizer and drunk but i made sure no one got backstage. the next day, his wife and child met him at the airport.
i am not trying to sell you anything so no buying is not necessary. i am simply offering a different perspective.
OFF THE SUBJECT: i just got finished doing the obstacle course with my Explorers group. I'm exhausted!!! those young jokers can move! some of them went twice!!! if you have a post at your dept, volunteer sometime. if you have a group of teens that want to hang out with the police, be there for them.

SpencerStangz, we shall agree to disagree on your views. Money is the root of all evil. You've heard this and read this before. So, you are saying that this man is a good man who has changed his ways and is only putting on a show. If this is true and he is such a good man why does he compromise his intregity for money? I have more integrity than that, as do most LEOs. You couldn't get us to spout anti (fill in the blank) for any amount of money if we didn't believe it. I am not PC. I am right on with snhadley on not interested in that class. $22 an hour to protect someone anti-LE, really...? As you can see, I am still not buying what you are selling.

SpencerStangs, I missed the class on political correctness, do not plan on attending one in the future, I stand by what I said but when it comes to respecting the Office of the President I take no prisoners! President Bush did the same thing and backed out when it got too heated for him. President Bush made an unpopular decision with respect to inviting rapper Easy E to the White House, I repected him for making making that decision but did not agree. I stand by what I said about an alleged LE officer who forgot that we protect and serve everyone! Some of us are still called Peace Officer's. I only read the two posts from you that you just submitted. I will go back and read yours. Respect goes two ways and when an individual disrepects what and who I love then it is on! I have no beef with what you are saying people do change. I have never to my knowledge listened to common. I have however, researched a little about him. If his words are about killing good decent, hardworking, law-abing professional Law Enforcement Officer's, then I have a problem with that. If he is talking about bad cops I have a problem with that also. Because, the average person does not know the difference between a good cop and a bad cop. Most times people define us on the outcome of their interaction with LE. If it was a good encounter than cops are great if the encounter did not go the way the citizen likes then it's a bad cop. As my earlier post should show you and the reader. Good is good and bad must go! LE knows the difference, we do a pretty good job of taking out the trash!
