Obama Invites Anti-Cop Rapper to White House

WASHINGTON, DC – Lonnie Rashid Lynn Jr., more commonly known as the rapper “Common”, was invited by First Lady Michelle Obama among other poets to celebrate American poetry and prose on Wednesday, May 11, thedailycaller.com reports.

Lynn’s divisive lyrics about gun violence, shooting police, and even for burning the president (who at the time was George W. Bush), make him a controversial choice for the White House. “Burn a Bush cos for peace he no push no button,” he raps on a YouTube video with more than 800,000 views.

He is also a known supporter of convicted cop killer Mumia Abu-Jamal, according to the examiner.com. Abu-Jamal was a member of the Black Panther Party, and was sentenced in 1981 for killing a Philadelphia police officer.

Coincidentally, President Obama and the rapper/poet Lynn are members of Trinity United Church of Christ, reports the New Hampshire Journal. Additionally, Obama’s presidential campaign in 2008 came under fire when the church’s Reverend Jeremiah Wright made several charged sermons in support of Obama.

“Several of Wright’s sermons caused a firestorm of controversy during the 2008 presidential campaign due to their caustic, racially charged, anti-American tones. One sermon in particular caused Obama a severe headache – the one in which he blamed America for Osama bin Laden’s terrorist attacks. ‘America’s chickens are coming home to roost,’ he said.” – New Hampshire Journal

At the time, Obama defended and then rejected Wright, whereas Lynn came to the reverend’s defense.

Lynn also named his daughter after Assata Shakur, another Black Panther party member. In 1977, Shakur was found guilty of first-degree murder and fled to Cuba after escaping prison, reports the New Hampshire Journal.

At the White House event, Lynn and other artists will participate in an afternoon workshop educating children.

The AP reports that other artists invited to attend are Elizabeth Alexander, Billy Collins, Rita Dove, Kenneth Goldsmith, Alison Knowles, Aimee Mann, and Jill Scott.

SpencerStangz, After reading the latest string, I am once again compelled to voice my opinion...... Number one, I do take issue with your defense and protective attitude towards this Rapper (Common). As I stated in the sister article on this subject matter, "Even if this guy is reformed, this particular invite is and will for ever be a slapp in the face to law enforcement everywhere". Why is this so damn hard for you to understand...??? Police Week and the original intent of it, is for the honoring and respecting those brave warriors in blue, who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the service and defense of our Nation. I don't care if the Rapper is Common, or Big E or what ever he goes by. He at one time or another, has for ever tarnished his chance or right to be counted as a "Law Abiding Citizen". Must you continue to be a spokesman for this object of reject..??? I not going to question your law enforcement background, but as my brother snhadley stated, "Sir ask our Chief and get right with the LEOs on this site".

y'all are cool...i understand about speaking officer to officer. sometimes you don't fully understand a job until you work it. i used to give exact change to delivery drivers until i became one in high school/college. other than the little star, i don't know what i could tell you to convince you but i am what i am.
like i said before though, my job fits my life, not the other way around. i base my opinions off of both. i enjoy PL and these discussions.
ranger, the way our policy says it, i must get permission first. just gonna do it right.
like i said, i can't say it but its relatively easy to find out. that's why i think the rule is silly but i must follow it...
we have gotten off point though...lol

SpencerStangz, I have placed too much belief in the verification process of PL. I have been reminded of those who spoffed the process and abused the good members of PL. Therefore. I retract my previous statements without deletion. I respect your position on the verification process and officially un-hijack this thread!

Catwomen911, you don't believe because you are not a cop and I respect that! Please advise when I called you ignorant! Did you not understand that I value your opinion as who and what you are. You can look and be around cops all day but until you are one you have no scale to measure them by. I am not your enemy nor am I SpencerStangz, You gave your opinion as who you are no verification needed. He gave his opinion as a LEO. Opinion is irrelevent. Status as an LEO is! when someone speaks as they are one! What is it that you don't get about that!

snhadley! I do not believe that a person needs to be verified as a cop.. there have been some instances where people on here have been verified, who where not supposed to be, and people who are unverified who could be. I do not feel as though because you have a "star" by your name, you are any better than anyone else on here. And by the way, I have been involved with Police AND Detectives at my own department. No, I am not either of the two, but neither am I ignorant as you perceive me to be! Oh, and I don't care what you do or who you are!

Catwomen911, We are at the topic at hand! I am a Detective, I DETECT! You are presenting yourself as who you are and your opinion is valued. However, cops need to know when they are talking to cops, period! Regardless of the topic. That would be something that you may or may not understand! Real recognizes real! Opinions are just that opinions but do not give an opinion based on what you say you are and are not! Rgr that Ranger719, What's the problem with verification! Duh, Policelink, hello!
