WASHINGTON, DC – Lonnie Rashid Lynn Jr., more commonly known as the rapper “Common”, was invited by First Lady Michelle Obama among other poets to celebrate American poetry and prose on Wednesday, May 11, thedailycaller.com reports.

Lynn’s divisive lyrics about gun violence, shooting police, and even for burning the president (who at the time was George W. Bush), make him a controversial choice for the White House. “Burn a Bush cos for peace he no push no button,” he raps on a YouTube video with more than 800,000 views.

He is also a known supporter of convicted cop killer Mumia Abu-Jamal, according to the examiner.com. Abu-Jamal was a member of the Black Panther Party, and was sentenced in 1981 for killing a Philadelphia police officer.

Coincidentally, President Obama and the rapper/poet Lynn are members of Trinity United Church of Christ, reports the New Hampshire Journal. Additionally, Obama’s presidential campaign in 2008 came under fire when the church’s Reverend Jeremiah Wright made several charged sermons in support of Obama.

“Several of Wright’s sermons caused a firestorm of controversy during the 2008 presidential campaign due to their caustic, racially charged, anti-American tones. One sermon in particular caused Obama a severe headache – the one in which he blamed America for Osama bin Laden’s terrorist attacks. ‘America’s chickens are coming home to roost,’ he said.” – New Hampshire Journal

At the time, Obama defended and then rejected Wright, whereas Lynn came to the reverend’s defense.

Lynn also named his daughter after Assata Shakur, another Black Panther party member. In 1977, Shakur was found guilty of first-degree murder and fled to Cuba after escaping prison, reports the New Hampshire Journal.

At the White House event, Lynn and other artists will participate in an afternoon workshop educating children.

The AP reports that other artists invited to attend are Elizabeth Alexander, Billy Collins, Rita Dove, Kenneth Goldsmith, Alison Knowles, Aimee Mann, and Jill Scott.

To LAWMANTUKES - Isn't that what is normally done with issues people don't want to see! Muddy the waters with things that have nothing to do with the issue at hand.

    LonnaNJ,

I will forever be puzzled at why people choose to ignor and cloud the issues at hand. This string is supposed to allow a response regarding one's opinion about the untimely invite by the POTUS, during "POLICE WEEK". Why must you join the minority of negetive members, to stray off course and insight more foolish replys to the actual article...??????????

Liddy: When the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms thugs come to kill your wife and children, to try to disarm you and they open fire on you. When they come at the point of a gun, force and violence, when you're going to defend yourself, use that Gerand [M-1 rifle]. That thing is 30-06, and it'll take 'em right out.

Caller: And yes, aim for the head.

    Liddy: Absolutely.

dy: Arm yourself. Get instructed in how to shoot straight.

    Caller: I've got weapons.

Liddy: Absolutely. And don't give 'em up, and don't register either.

Caller: No way. And I'm aiming between the eyes.

Liddy: There you go. That way their flak jackets won't protect them.

For the listeners to Liddy's 250 stations, appeals for the election of Republican candidates were sandwiched between frequent depictions of the Clinton administration as an evil that needed to be resisted with deadly force. That may explain why Liddy was invited to be the guest of honor at the Republican Party's "Salute to Talk Radio.
    (Thomas McCain + Gordon Liddy)
In 1998, Liddy's home was the site of a McCain fundraiser. Over the years, he has made at least four contributions totaling $5,000 to the senator's campaigns--including $1,000 this year.
Last November, McCain went on his radio show. Liddy greeted him as "an old friend," and McCain sounded like one. "I'm proud of you, I'm proud of your family," he gushed. "It's always a pleasure for me to come on your program, Gordon, and congratulations on your continued success and adherence to the principles and philosophies that keep our nation great."

You know, I met Obama when I was a LEO in extreme Southern Illinois, he talked a very good game when he met with all us LEO's for a dinner to get us to vote for him, now that he is in office, I think he has forgotten all about what got him there, and the fact that he has now decided to have Common at the Whitehouse is without a doubt a slap in the face to all LEO's. Maybe Obama should think about who protects him everytime he walks out of that building. If I thought he would return an e-mail, I would invite hime to come to work with me one midnight shift here in East Saint Louis where I work now. Maybe he could see how we are treated on the streets and gain a new respect.

Thank you ilegworldchamp!!! Once again Obama has proven that he is not a full supporter of LEOs. Just cant wait until he is out of office, as for Common. Reformed or not, I personally dont care, you made your stance with your support of convicted copkillers. The invite to the white house was a slap in the face. The insults given to all LEOs by Obama will continue to happen; but no matter what, I do know my LEO brothers and sisters will continue to answer the call of duty even if it means they have to protect the low lifes that spit on the ground we walk on. They will have to deal with the humilty of asking for our help. As for the fallen brothers and sisters I am proud to be part of your family and honored to have ever been in your presence.

my man you love the exclamation point button lol. is it so hard to understand that i don't hold/count someones sins against them. no i don't feel slapped in the face by this. i have been slapped in the face and this ain't it!...joke...anywho...can y'all please step away from the whole LEO or non LEO. it doesn't make a difference. i simply don't feel the same as some of y'all about this topic. that's not gonna change. agree to disagree. cool with me. a few folks have figured out that i am a LEO...its not that hard...but what does it change? nothing. i am the same Godly, respectful poster that i was before. once again, i have made it clear how i feel about this topic on this thread. you DON'T have to agree. it's fine. i still love y'all and will pray for all y'all. i hope that those of you truly in the faith do the same for me and everyone else. Romans_116 pointed out that i shouldn't support a worldly artist. i don't support the artist, i support the MAN. he said he respects us, I BELIEVE HIM. if he comes out with a new poem or song that says otherwise, then i will reconsider.

also check my profile soon...decided to post a pic that says nothing about my agency. but it shows my cluttered desk with all my MUSTANGS and POLICE CARS all over it. my pocket Bible that our Chaplain hands out. my beautiful fiance's picture. the computer screen shows todays headline from the main page. i own a '06 GT and a '68 Coupe. hence the name SpencerStangz. Be blessed and stay safe.

EDITORIAL: Obama missing: National Police Week
President is present for rapper, absent for cop memorial
    By THE WASHINGTON TIMES
    -
    The Washington Times
    5:06 p.m., Friday, May 13, 2011

Sunday, May 15 is the 30th annual Peace Officers Memorial Service. Law enforcement from all over the country gathered in Washington for National Police Week to honor fallen comrades-in-arms. Too bad President Obama couldn’t be there.
Despite being invited to speak to the widows, children and friends of the 165 officers recognized this year as killed in the line of duty, he somehow didn’t think it was important to trek the two miles from the White House to the Capitol Building to participate. Perhaps it’s because Mr. Obama historically has had a conflicted relationship with law enforcement.
While he has hosted the “Top Cops” - officers recognized for heroism - in the Rose Garden, this president has consistently failed to mention National Police Week, which is observed every year with the thin blue line gathering in town. Mr. Obama spoke at the memorial service in 2010 - never mind that it was his next opportunity after infamously saying Cambridge, Mass., police acted “stupidly” in arresting Harvard professor Henry Louis “Skip” Gates when responding to a breaking-and-entering report. Mr. Obama declined to speak at the service in 2009, choosing instead to host baseball’s World Series winners, where he offered his condolences to a Philadelphia Phillie who lost his mother during the playoffs: “I know how tough that is. I lost my grandmother in the middle of my election. … I admired your perseverance during those trying times. I know how hard that must have been on you.”
President George W. Bush set a different example, speaking at the Peace Officer’s Memorial Service every year of his presidency except 2008, when being in Jerusalem made his attendance impossible. As he noted May 15, 2007, “I have been here ever since I’ve been the president… it’s fitting because this is a really important day for our country [when] we remember men and women who fell in the line of duty.”
Remembered or forgotten by the Obama White House, the families and friends of those killed in the line of duty weren’t expecting to be insulted during the week they remember their dead. On Wednesday, the White House hosted a poetry night at which rapper Common, author of at least one work praising a convicted cop-killer, performed. Fraternal Order of Police National President Chuck Canterbury sent a letter expressing his “profound disappointment” with the invitation and followed it up with a phone call reminding Mr. Obama’s staff that National Police Week is “a time to honor law-enforcement officers for their service and sacrifice.”
Though Mr. Obama lacks the experience of donning a uniform in service to his country or his community, that’s a reminder he shouldn’t have needed - particularly if he expects peace officers’ support come 2012.
