WASHINGTON, DC – Lonnie Rashid Lynn Jr., more commonly known as the rapper “Common”, was invited by First Lady Michelle Obama among other poets to celebrate American poetry and prose on Wednesday, May 11, thedailycaller.com reports.
Lynn’s divisive lyrics about gun violence, shooting police, and even for burning the president (who at the time was George W. Bush), make him a controversial choice for the White House. “Burn a Bush cos for peace he no push no button,” he raps on a YouTube video with more than 800,000 views.
He is also a known supporter of convicted cop killer Mumia Abu-Jamal, according to the examiner.com. Abu-Jamal was a member of the Black Panther Party, and was sentenced in 1981 for killing a Philadelphia police officer.
Coincidentally, President Obama and the rapper/poet Lynn are members of Trinity United Church of Christ, reports the New Hampshire Journal. Additionally, Obama’s presidential campaign in 2008 came under fire when the church’s Reverend Jeremiah Wright made several charged sermons in support of Obama.
“Several of Wright’s sermons caused a firestorm of controversy during the 2008 presidential campaign due to their caustic, racially charged, anti-American tones. One sermon in particular caused Obama a severe headache – the one in which he blamed America for Osama bin Laden’s terrorist attacks. ‘America’s chickens are coming home to roost,’ he said.” – New Hampshire Journal
At the time, Obama defended and then rejected Wright, whereas Lynn came to the reverend’s defense.
Lynn also named his daughter after Assata Shakur, another Black Panther party member. In 1977, Shakur was found guilty of first-degree murder and fled to Cuba after escaping prison, reports the New Hampshire Journal.
At the White House event, Lynn and other artists will participate in an afternoon workshop educating children.
The AP reports that other artists invited to attend are Elizabeth Alexander, Billy Collins, Rita Dove, Kenneth Goldsmith, Alison Knowles, Aimee Mann, and Jill Scott.

Even though I attempted to educate some here about the origin and history of "Police Week", there are those that still just don't get it.... That tells me that some are here on our site to just adjitate, talk Bull$hit and defend the actions of the POTUS no matter what he does. I'm sick and tired of foolish posts, that make absolutely no sense at all. Members such as my brother ilegworldchamp, Robocop33, snhadley and my sisters such as DonnaLynn to include myself, are in my opinion fighting a straight and noble battle to inform while defending the sacret and honorable period that is known as "POLICE WEEK". And any so called LEO or supporter that doesn't understand or know the histroy or meaning for which "POLICE WEEK" stands for, should just get the hell off the subject and leave us to our mourning and recognition of our true brothers and sisters who have earned the right to be called "Fellow LEOs". After all, the is "Police Link" "The Nation's Law Enforcement Community" and not "My Space" Or "Face Book"...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is not a black or white issue. Common professes his hate for the police in his "music" and his his support for many cop killers. Obama and Michelle invite him to the White House. How can anyone in Law Enforcement not see the problem with that?

LOL is all I have to say about this video.
This guy is someone that the MC says is one of his closest friends and heroes? Hyping up this guy says a bit about him too. Amazing display of one person who absolutely should NOT be preaching this kind of bs to our children.

I missed the part about him being at the white house during law enforcement week somehow, just overlooked it i guess. Yea, hits me about the same as Obama skipping the usual presidential trip to Arlington a year or two ago on memorial or veterans day (not sure which it was) where presidents for decades have had ceremonies with boyscouts to honor the dead. Bad choice after bad choice will result in history remembering our first black president as a one term kinda guy.

Bump ajsdaddy and DonnaLynn.
Stangz, you do not discuss, your make excuses and frankly, little sense.
Koreavet, you sir frankly are either stupid or ignorant of history, or exceptionally bigoted and you do not belong here. You can only twist the truth so far before it becomes a lie. Speak the truth, good or bad and yes you can even have an opposite opinion but have something to to back it up other than slogans or information that is untrue or unprovable.
This thread is about the leader of this nation inviting a person to the White House, also known as the Peoples House, during the month and particularly the week we honor our fallen brothers and sisters in Law Enforcement. This said person has made 'music', (I don't think of it as music but some do), whose lyrics are exceptionally anti-police and condoning violence towards the police and who even supports a female who was convicted of not only killing, but executing a State Trooper in the line of duty. The president is supposed to be representing the people and his actions of inviting this POS to our house and then going off to play golf instead of honoring out deceased friends, well that is unacceptable and he will rightly lose many votes in the next election.

I pray for the LEOs' families as they go through their hardships and mourning. Their longing and heartaches will go on for a long time. Their mommy, daddy, mother, father, brother, sister, spouse will not return home, will not see that ball game, that dance recital, their smile and laughter, the birthdays... you get it right? And we honor them for the ULTIMATE SACRIFICE! They were out their protecting the good and the bad equally! These fine men and women were DIShonored and continue to be dishonored. And you, SpencerStangz are no brother of mine. To say that you do not find this behavior disrespectful is ridiculous and the ULTIMATE DISRESPECT.

@SpencerStangz: Opinions on here vary more than can be determined by reading the comments/posts. There could be many reasons why the ones that do get voiced tend to lean to one side--that's a topic too complicated for the comments section, though...assuming it's worth exploring at all, that is.

"There have been scores of dictators and mass murderers allied to US Presidents, if US Presidents themselves were invloved in wholesale genocide of American Indians or in Nixons case, Vietnamese civilians, so where this scrutiny with a rapper going to a Whitehouse function as a poet causes disloyalty or discomfort for some is simply a racial and white supremecist heritage ingrained within American society."
First thank you for your service. Second go get yourself bent. Your opinion shows off your racism more than you know. By the way was it Nixon that put us into Vietnam? Was it Nixon that escalated Vietnam? Or was it Nixon that got US troops out of Vietnam? Try looking at what Kennedy and LBJ did to further our involvement in that country. Next, do you carry a badge? I honor the fallen of our troops, I honor their memories, I honor their service and sacrifice. What we are dealing with here is a "president" and apparently a few of you here who could give two flips about honoring OUR dead. So, go get bent and while you're at it try to stay on topic. This isn't a politicall issue, this isn't a race issue. THIS IS A FREAKING DECENCY ISSUE. You don't have to agree hit and run poster but if you want respect it must be given. So far this "president" has done anything but.

i say it because i mean it. what has happened to the world when saying you love people is somehow wrong. some of you say over and over again the same opinion. i don't think you're trying to convince yourselves that you feel that way. i just think y'all are very passionate about how you feel. i am too.
it more like this site isn't for LEOs. its only for those who share the same beliefs not profession. i am still on here because of the info. for the most part, the articles are very informative. thread like this are just discussion areas. but i do have a question. i think is was addressed before but i couldn't find it. when is police week? my agency sent officers to DC for events THIS week. we had our memorial during the first week of May. oh no...here it comes...
love y'all and i mean it. its not a joke. i do. gotta love you.
