SALT LAKE CITY – A Salt Lake City police officer shot and critically wounded a car thief early Sunday after the man had rammed another officer’s car.

Police were called at 3:35 a.m. to respond to a hit-and-run at 500 West and 400 South. Officers located the vehicle, which was stolen, at the front entrance of a trailer court at 1594 W. 400 South, police said.

Officers entered the trailer park, and found the man inside another stolen vehicle. The man attempted to flee the scene in the car, and struck an officer’s car. A second officer fired, hitting the driver and the stolen vehicle, police said.

The man continued driving south on Redwood Road to about 2600 South, where he stopped. Officers arrested him at 3:47 a.m.

He was taken to an area hospital in critical condition.

The officer who fired the shots has been placed on paid administrative leave per department policy. Both the Salt Lake City Police Department and the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office are investigating the shooting.
