Teen Tortured, Forcibly Tattooed, Left for Dead by Peers

Teen Tortured, Forcibly Tattooed, Left for Dead by Peers

Stetson Johnson, 18, holds back his hair to show a tattoo on his forehead in his home in Oklahoma City, Wednesday, May 4, 2011.

DEL CITY, Okla. — Two men and two women are accused of pinning down a man who has learning disabilities, tattooing the word “RAPEST” on his forehead and shocking his genitals with a stun gun before beating him unconscious with a baseball bat, police said Wednesday.

The accused told police they attacked Stetson Johnson, 18, because he tried to have sex with one of them, according to a police spokesman. Detectives found no evidence to support their claims, he said.

Johnson, of Oklahoma City, said he is acquainted with all four but has never tried to hurt any of them. He said the April 17 attack began when he was thrown to the ground and kicked in the face “dozens of times” by two men while two women took turns using a stun gun on his genitals. He said the attackers yelled obscenities at him.

“I was screaming. It was hurting,” he said. “After they kicked me in the face I said, ‘Oh my god, they’re going to kill me.’”

Two women and two men are being held without bail but have not been formally charged. Capt. Jody Suit, spokesman for the Del City Police Department, said police plan to recommend charges of assault and battery, maiming by disfigurement and kidnapping.

The attackers placed duct tape around Johnson’s hands and held him down while one tattooed the word “RAPEST” on his forehead, Johnson said. The word, apparently a misspelling of “rapist,” has since been covered with another tattoo that looks like a bar code.

The attackers also tattooed a phrase on his chest that resembles “I like little boys,” police said.

They then put Johnson in a car and transported him to Eagle Lake in Del City, where he was beaten in the arms and head with a baseball bat, causing a gash in his head that required 18 stitches to close.

Johnson said he was unconscious for about two hours before he awoke and sought help.

“When I got up I felt dizzy,” he said. Johnson said he tried to get help from motorists on a nearby highway before walking about a quarter of a mile to a mobile home park, where a resident called police.

“They found him almost dead,” Suit said.

Johnson spent a week in the hospital, including three days in the intensive care unit, for treatment of a fractured skull, broken nose and other wounds sustained in the beating.

“They almost killed me,” he said.

Police seized tattoo guns, needles, ink and a Taser gun after the suspects were taken into custody, according to a police report.

Suit says the attackers told authorities they were trying to punish Johnson after one of the women accused him of trying to have sex with her. Johnson denies that, and Suit says there’s no evidence to support it.

“To me it’s bullying. The guy has the mentality of a fifth-grader,” Suit said.

He said the four have not yet been assigned public defenders.

Johnson bears scars from the attack and said he has trouble breathing and seeing out of one eye. He also said he suffers from anxiety and has nightmares about being killed.

“Everywhere I go, I look around like, ’What’s going to happen?’” he said. “I don’t understand why they would do something like this until I was almost dead. They deserve justice.”

He said he would like to have the tattoos removed but cannot afford it. In the meantime, he had the one on his forehead turned into a barcode, with the numerals “7” that he hopes will bring him luck and a reference to 2010, which he said was a good year for him.

Johnson’s mother, Lucy Ford, said she and her son plan to move from their southwest Oklahoma City home.

“He feels that it’s unsafe for him here. He can’t sleep at night,” Ford said. “I just can’t believe that people would be so mean. He’s 18 years old. He has his whole life before him. And he almost lost it?”

Johnson’s sister, Crystal Cline, said the incident makes her fear for the safety of her two small children.

“People are evil these days,” Cline said.

It sounds like bullying to me... this is sad, but I hope that a full investigation will find the truth. As for the victim, I am disgusted that four people can hold down one person, and forcibly tattoo him!!! That is just cruel!

All of us who work in Law Enforcement are all too familiar with the media and the grape vine influencing the initial outcome of a story. I agree, a through investigation needs to be done and let the chips fall where they may either for the victim or the perpetrators of this vile act. let this investigation be comprised of facts and evidence not by speculation and hear say. When the dust settles may justice seize the day. In the meantime may be someone in the victims community would step forward and assist with the removal of this tattoo. Compassion is not a word to be thrown around, but one to be acted upon.

I am surprised at all the comments. This site is a majority of Law Enforcement. However, the comments have pretty well already tried and judged these people from a media story. The same thing the public does to Law Enforcement Officers, that people on this site hate.

I think the 4 should be tried by the evidence and testimony the police were able to collect. The jury can make their verdict and then the right punishment for the crime can be handed down.

I also think the allegations about the victim "trying to have sex with one of them" should be investigated. It sounds like it has been and there was no evidence of that occurring. However, just because someone has a mental disability, does not give them a free pass.

This is a horrible story. I wish things like this would never happen. However it does, so I will let the court system do their job. But I am not going to try any of these people from a media article.

Romans _116: I did understand your point. In fact, I partially agreed did I not? Out of context?Hmmm. Context was, per your comment that the perps needed a beating. My context (mentally) was: At their ages, I doubt a beating will do much to alter their attitudes or their thinking and that's the point of discipline, eh, to train. Yes, I'm guilty of jumping thoughts from punishment to discipline, thinking of the many scriptures related to training children and the use of discipline (of both sorts) Punishment is another matter and that's what these four perps are in for, I hope. I didn't ask if you knew THE meaning of rod...sorry I offended your theological sensibilities. (Now I am smiling.) Yup, I like to use LOTS of translations in research, too, including those with the Catholic 'stamp of approval' as well as 'protestant' ones. Okay, out to enjoy a spring day and hope to 'hear' later that justice is/was served in this case, understanding that's your hope also.

Very sad story. I want to know what kind of charges these 4 idiots will be getting. Whatever they are, they probably deserve worse!

copzmom. Yes I do know the meaning of "rod". Careful not to take the scripture out of context. I'm glad your kids came out ok, well done on your part. But your kids are not the topic of discussion here.

it's so sad to look at him and imagine him being assaulted. he looks like a good kid. whether he wanted to have sex with a woman or not (i doubt he was trying to rape her, though, if he did, it might be the result of his mental disabilities). i think the four that did this are no better than Osama bin Laden. urban terrorists. only difference is a lack of resources.

A very sad day to see anyone would be treated like this, and that anyone would think it was ok.
Their are some real troubled people out there.
Not only should these animals pay all his doctor bills, they should pay to have all tattoos removed and any plastic surgery to have his face/body repaired.
    Just sickening.

This bull shit, to get this done to him he probly did do it. But no one person should get treated like that. They should let the law take care of the problem. If more people use the system the more they wont be behind bars/wall. If these people did this to him, then some one should do it to them and either put them on the street or hook them up with some reall criminals in jail, just to see how they like it.

This is a horrible story. And for those of you that think it's funny to say "he probably DID rape somebody" you are ridiculous! Only an uneducated person would say such things. I don't know if you read that he has "the mentality of a fifth-grader" that means he cannot process things the same way that a normal 18 year old can. Physically he is an adult but mentally he is still a child. Those 4 people need to be punished to the fullest. That young man will always have to look in the mirror and wonder why these people did this to him. God Bless him and his family and help them through these difficult times.

And to Romans_116, I trust you understand the entire meaning of the word "discipline" and "rod" in that verse. It's worth researching, as 'rod' does not necessarily mean a physical instrument, although it CAN mean that. Yes, I DID spank my own children when that was the appropriate corporal punishment, but they rarely ever 'needed' that sort of discipline because I emphasized the other sort...they grew up to be EMS, police, and health-care workers (and majority as well as good, responsible parents). Nope, not all became good, responsible parents; even the 'worst' is not, however, an abuser. That child has saved several lives, despite living a lifestyle that I personally am disappointed and worried about.

Perpetrators should bear all costs of having the tattoos removed. I don't blame the mom for planning to move away from the area. Now, this is all assuming that the young man did not attempt to rape anyone. There is a huge difference between soliciting, suggesting, requesting, etc., and attempted rape. The three former deserve a, "Uh...no." The latter deserves a 911 call and jail time. The four people being held for this attack displayed something different from 'revenge'...they apparently had a good time. They're dangerous.
