BP Agents Told to Stop Making Illegal Immigrant Arrests

Both sheriffs are elected officials. Dever is a Republican, Estrada, a Democrat.

Others have questioned the methodology and conclusions of the Homeland Security numbers showing the border is more secure.

Mark Hanna, CEO of Real Life Enterprises, a Phoenix-based technology integration and security company, has testified before the Arizona Senate about what he called Homeland Security’s flawed methodology used to compile border security statistics. Hanna maintains the numbers are dangerously misleading.

Hanna, who is currently working on a private/public partnership pilot program along the Arizona border, said he attended a February conference at which Michael Fisher, chief of the United States Border Patrol, and Mark S. Borkowski, assistant commissioner for technology and innovation acquisition, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, showed off charts indicating arrests were decreasing and argued the border was more secure. The charts also showed an increase in marijuana seizures along the border and an increase in Border Patrol agents.

But those charts left out crucial data, Hanna said.

“Since we don’t know how many illegal crossings are occurring, then a decrease in apprehensions might mean that there are fewer illegal crossings, and the border is more secure. But it could also just as easily mean that more illegal border crossings are occurring, and we’re just not catching as many. In order to know how secure the border is, you need to know how many are crossing and the threat level of those who are crossing illegally," he said.

“It is a very dangerous condition for the secretary of Homeland Security to be using incomplete data to form such a conclusion, and then repeatedly announce these conclusions as fact,” he said.

The Department of Homeland Security did not return repeated requests for comment on Hanna’s specific challenges to the agency’s methodology.

Whatever the methodology, Dever said the numbers don’t accurately describe what’s happening on the ground.

“We do not know who’s crossing that border, but that anyone who wants to can. That’s the message our nation needs to hear, that anyone who wants to can, and is. And our own Department of Homeland Security does not have clear definition of what securing the border even means," Dever said.

“People are disgusted, the smiles are gone off their face, their general sense of welfare been taken away from them and until that’s returned you can throw all the numbers on the board. … I’ll tell Napolitano, in spite of all of your declarations and efforts to the contrary, things are not safe. No, they are not secure.

“You can use your numbers to say it’s more secure, but it does not define a sense of safety or well-being. You can say it’s more secure, but it’s more dangerous than ever.”

How much do you gals and guys like using bean bags instead of bullets? Knowing Zetas have better equipment than YOU do? Knowing that the government is corrupt and you..the law keeper and law enforcer can do nothing about it? Kind of frustrating ...don't you think?
Get involved outside your department. Work with citizens to get the proper bills passed in your state. Be there when the citizens working so hard to change this, need you.
In SC we have sanctuary cities..which is against our laws. The police officers don't realize..I guess..that they are co conspirators in committing felonies in our state. We tried to warn one city in particular and they sent police officers, EMS, and Fire to protect the illegals from us bunch of old ladies, when we protested. How about that? The city uses OUR taxes to give a place for the Matricular Consulate to sell Matricular cards and passports to illegals. I had to sit there...a former police officer..and watch 1300 illegals walk past me in just a few hours. And it ticked me off when a tiny Hispanic police officer came out and denied us the use of the bathroom because some illegal ..or herself... lied about what happened when I went to the little girls room!
She was one nasty little officer!
Another thing I am so tired of, is no camaraderie between former police officers and those presently employed! I am tired of the corrupt police officers that I have met in the past 10 years. It makes my stomach turn!
Pray tell....make me feel better....tell me there are more compassionate, legitimate, law abiding officers out there than there are corrupt ones, uncaring ones, narcissistic ones! Please give me some positive re-enforcement! Maybe I need to leave this place...

You also need to start jumping all over the Attorney General AND the United States Attorneys Offices. They are the ones charged with PROSECUTING these cases, not the Secretary of Homeland Security. Think of it this way, a Police Officer can only arrest someone and write his affidavit for presentation to the District Attorney. The District Attorney holds sway over the actual prosecution of the case. The Attorney General and the various United States Attoreys are the ones who dictate prosecution, i.e. The DHS is the Federal Police Force, and can only arrest people and present them for prosecution. So, before you start slamming the good women and men of DHS's CBP, HSI, ERO, TSA and other enforcement agencies for not prosecuting, remember the above. Scream at the Prosecutors, not the Cops.....

Arrrest vs sent back to Mexico. First, not ALL illegal aliens are from Mexico. Second, I doubt any jail or county anywhere in this great country has the manpower and/or space to hold the numbers of "Arrests" this sheriff is demanding. Also, MANY Mexican nationals are returned to Mexico because they are not seen as a threat to our national security or public safely. I know, but, get off your soap box of social services and how draining illegal immigratoin is on them. We already know that. However, even Sheriff Joe realizes that you can't arrest everyone (though if it put his name in the media spotilght again I'm sure he'd try). Arizona, Texas, California, and New Mexico haven't sufficient land to hold all the tent cities needed to house all those that need to be "arrested." I'm just as fed up as everyone else and we need to start demanding that our immigration laws are enforced. ACLU, LULAC, and other groups need to shut-up and let the Feds do their jobs with the meager resources they have.

I'm not surprised. Low number of apprehensions can be used to "prove" that low numbers of illegals are coming into the country! Fits the Admin's program to trivialize the illegal problem we have.
    2012 cannot come soon enough!

*“The claim that Border Patrol supervisors have been instructed to underreport or manipulate our statistics is unequivocally false,” Jeffery Self, commander of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Joint Field Command in Arizona, said in a written statement.*

If an arrest is not made, what is there to report? This is a total non-response. The citizens need to know...

    Citizens need to be knowing
How bad that things are now going.
    Without a report
    How can they support
    And protect our whistle blowing?

It seems to me that an agent is going above board and now is paying the price by his superiors back-stepping due to media coverage. He's going to go against some tall tales in the future. Hope he can withstand the backlash on this and keep his job later. Good luck to all the Border Patrol agents that are risking their lives for us. Thanks.

Hey bumer, don't be glad, the government is telling them not to arrest them just to keep the numbers down. They don't want the rest of the country, who doesn't live along the border to know just how many illegals are actually coming into the country. Because if they knew there would be more support for keeping illegals out, and not giving them amnesty. That will just invite more over.

Our mission does not waiver based on political climate, and it never will..." Really!? I'm not even commenting on any particular administration, but COME ON! Local, state & federal enforcement is always going to be dictated by politics, especially when it comes to immigration.

Glad the Sheriff is not taking any of that BS! I thank god we have some decent Sheriffs down by the border here in Arizona who are willing to call bull sh*t when they see it.

Under reporting and changing of crime “titles” is an on going thing through out the US. This is done by the powers that be to drop crime stats in a given area to make it seam safer than it really is. The real trouble started about 15 years ago when the brass figured this out. Now they are doing it every place. The street cop knows what’s going on but he is being suppressed by the brass with threats over his job.
