BP Agents Told to Stop Making Illegal Immigrant Arrests

Both sheriffs are elected officials. Dever is a Republican, Estrada, a Democrat.

Others have questioned the methodology and conclusions of the Homeland Security numbers showing the border is more secure.

Mark Hanna, CEO of Real Life Enterprises, a Phoenix-based technology integration and security company, has testified before the Arizona Senate about what he called Homeland Security’s flawed methodology used to compile border security statistics. Hanna maintains the numbers are dangerously misleading.

Hanna, who is currently working on a private/public partnership pilot program along the Arizona border, said he attended a February conference at which Michael Fisher, chief of the United States Border Patrol, and Mark S. Borkowski, assistant commissioner for technology and innovation acquisition, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, showed off charts indicating arrests were decreasing and argued the border was more secure. The charts also showed an increase in marijuana seizures along the border and an increase in Border Patrol agents.

But those charts left out crucial data, Hanna said.

“Since we don’t know how many illegal crossings are occurring, then a decrease in apprehensions might mean that there are fewer illegal crossings, and the border is more secure. But it could also just as easily mean that more illegal border crossings are occurring, and we’re just not catching as many. In order to know how secure the border is, you need to know how many are crossing and the threat level of those who are crossing illegally," he said.

“It is a very dangerous condition for the secretary of Homeland Security to be using incomplete data to form such a conclusion, and then repeatedly announce these conclusions as fact,” he said.

The Department of Homeland Security did not return repeated requests for comment on Hanna’s specific challenges to the agency’s methodology.

Whatever the methodology, Dever said the numbers don’t accurately describe what’s happening on the ground.

“We do not know who’s crossing that border, but that anyone who wants to can. That’s the message our nation needs to hear, that anyone who wants to can, and is. And our own Department of Homeland Security does not have clear definition of what securing the border even means," Dever said.

“People are disgusted, the smiles are gone off their face, their general sense of welfare been taken away from them and until that’s returned you can throw all the numbers on the board. … I’ll tell Napolitano, in spite of all of your declarations and efforts to the contrary, things are not safe. No, they are not secure.

“You can use your numbers to say it’s more secure, but it does not define a sense of safety or well-being. You can say it’s more secure, but it’s more dangerous than ever.”

I wonder if this is the same as when the bosses use to set a cap on our overtime for the month which means your arrest was being regulated so not to get penalized certain arrest you would not make or you just want look.

Okay, hold on some of you. NOBODY is saying that the rank and file Officers like our ICE, CBP are not doing their jobs or are slacking in any way. I have the utmost respect for our brothers in Green who are out there on the front lines trying to stop this human tidal wave from over-running us. What we are saying is that there are those at the top in this Administration who wish to under report the numbers strictly for political reasons and they are not interested in protecting our borders or even our men and women in green and blue along the boarder.
The person who included the TSA in this, you are joking I assume as the TSA for the most part a clueless idiots who run around making noise and bothering good people and they certainly are not LE.
The rank and file guys are just doing what they are told to do and I am sure they are every bit as frustrated as the rest of us are at having their hands tied in most cases. It is the politicians and political appointees that we need to get rid of before we lose a large portion of our nation to Mexico.
Again, I resent anyone saying that corruption runs rampant in LE and you better have facts to back it up or yes you are in the wrong place.

Thank you, Mark Hanna! The numbers currently being reported are as inaccurate as the day is long. I'm part of an interdiction team that has come in contact with several vehicle loads of illegal immigrants in the past couple of months. I'm not talking about 5-10 illegals - I'm talking 55-65. We've made phone calls and ICE took custody of 4 - the rest were released ... no interview, no processing, no tracking. ICE and CBP can only do so much with what they've got - I get that. I hold accountable an administration that refuses to provide our border enforcement agencies with the resources and personnel they need, but instead want to paint a picture of the illegal immigration problem that is disturbingly far from the truth. There is currently no system in place to track those illegals that make it past the checkpoints and that is why the numbers will never be close. Keep kissing ass on the border, Janet - those of us who actually get out and work and see first hand how out of control the issue is know the truth.

What? I guess the government could save money by putting up scare crows along the border, that should deter illegals from coming over! Yea right! Let the officers do their jobs! The government whines about drug cartels and violence but welcomes them to come over and cause violence here, that's no right. Practice what you preach!

Security is still sercurity and guess what, we have little. I would commend the officer for his honesty to the sheriff. It sounds like he disagrees with the order and will probably be secretly disciplined for the realeaswe of "Sensitive" information. I hope he joins FLEOA immediately.

“I took an oath that I take very seriously, and I find it insulting that anyone, especially a fellow law enforcement officer, would imply that we would put the protection of the American public and security of our nation’s borders in danger just for a numbers game," he said. "Our mission does not waiver based on political climate, and it never will. To suggest that we are ambiguous in enforcing our laws belittles the work of more than 6,000 CBP employees in Arizona who dedicate their lives to protect our borders every day.”

    he didnt deny it!!!!!

One undocumented person's wife told me it took her husband almost two weeks and $10,000 to get back to Dallas after he was deported. It can be a revolving door. Just saying.

@TRAFFICCOP84...I agree with you completely! I have been saying for years..bring our military home. Let them protect US from our invaders...all of them..from all nations...
Let the military patrol our borders, seas, lakes, and rivers. Get those illegals out of here..but first...we MUST build a huge WALL on the Southern border..then start on the Northern Border...but with NAFTA...I doubt it will ever happen. Also with all the corrupt politicians on both sides of the aisle...it will never happen. WE need to start a brand new party ..make is so large with WE the People that we blow the socks off the other two. But we need financial backing first. There seems to always be a "but"...I keep on trying though. We need to elect the common man to serve a TERM LIMIT up there and come home and let another like him/her to do the same. Keep it from corrupting those we send there. I could go on..................

Lawlessness begets lawlessness! When the legal "citizen criminals" of our country, who are already a thorn in the side of law enforcement and criminal justice system employees see the disparity in treatment of themselves to "illegal criminals; they apply a "moral relativistic" analysis to their own plight - - and try to justify continuing on a path of crime. Feeling (actually knowing) that they are being unfairly treated by having the "book" thrown at them while illegals walk, scot-free gives them a outlook to stay in crime. We're wrecking our nation, taking it apart like an onion, one thin layer at a time!

I say send all illegals back to where they came from. If the USA was on their toes then, just maybe, 9/11 could have been avoided. Let the police do their job..........................Government......................DO YOUR PART...........STAND BY THE CITIZENS OF THIS ONCE GREAT COUNTRY!!!!!!!!!!!

One another note, take our military from overseas and lets protect OUR Boarders with the armed forces and Border Patrol. Fly our jets over the NATION.

    GOD BLESS THE U.S.A.
