MESQUITE, TX – A cell phone video of a Texas police officer pepper spraying a baby squirrel in front of a group of students has sparked outrage after being posted on YouTube.

In the video, the middle school students can be heard pleading with the officer to leave the animal alone.

According to FOX , the Mesquite Police Department is defending the officer’s actions, saying the officer thought the animal may have been rabid.

After the incident, the squirrel was reportedly cared for by animal control officers before being released back to the wild.

The one that should've been pepperred was the kids out of control! Remember, "ordinary Mace, turns an ordinary cop, into an "Instant Ninja!"

This was not necessary at all. Yet another stupid mistake thats hurts every departments image. It was a tiny squirrel not harming anyone.

Course I must say the squirrel closed that reactionary gap rather quickly lol :P

But in all seriousness, bad decision dude.

We use to have a Western District in our police department. You could tell when the "city boys" were patroling out West. "Dispatcher", 207, call of cattle in the road. 207, 10-4, enroute. Upon arrival, 207, what do we do to get them back in the fence?
202 (me) to 207, be careful, are they black cows? 207, yes, 202, Ok, don't get too close, this type of cattle have teeth, they bite.. long silence, 207, please send additional units to my location. I will be waiting in my car!.. True Story... City cops afraid of their shadow.. cows, skunks, ratcoons, SNAKES (big time).

We have squirrels on our College Campus, they aren't afraid of anyone. If you sit down, have anything to eat, here they come.. This baby squirrel most likely wouldn't have injured anyone, but the officer can't take that chance. Would have made a great moving target!.
Anyway, most animals are not effected by pepper spray, no long term effects to the squarrel anyway.

COME ON GUYS A BROOM OR WATER HOSE WOULD HAVE WORKED JUST AS WELL AND THE KIDS WOULD NOT HAVE YET ANOTHER REASON FOR FEARING AND HATING US.

A squirrel is a wild animal and obviously had no fear of humans which is a sign of a sick animal. It is a shame that this was newsworthy and that the Officer now has to be scrutinized over his use of force against a wild animal. Good job, I would have dispatched it to keep the children safe from possible rabies infection.

I really don't want to comment on this...but to say going to my daughter's campus there were squirrels all over . They were not afraid of people and approached them all the time and were fed. I guess he would have shot a cat?

He had no choice, didn't you see the squirrel's threatening advance! All joking aside, I would have done the same, protect and serve the children of that school.

Good job Officer Davis, so let's say he doesn't do anything and it bites your child and it has rabies. The child now has to take a series of painful injections, he's condemned for doing nothing. Better yet he should have used his ASP to knock it out and carry the precious thing to a far far place to release it...Not. Let see pepper spray, ASP-?kill it, or possible rabies. LET'S SEE DUMB-ASSES pepper spray so if it doesn't have rabies it can be treated and then taken to a far far place released for you pet lovers. Again nice job Officer Davis

Really? Pepper spray? On a squirrel? What did he do? Come flying out of your Christmas Tree? That is the best you could come up with? What's the penalty for a barking dog?

I am an anilmal lover and am glad the little fella is ok. It was obvious to me tha the squirrel was very agressive as it kept coming forward, it is possable that it was rabid or, but none the less I am glad the Leo didnt use deadly force to stop it.

oh yeah they will spend about 12 hrs investigating the act and some animal rights group will protest the police department. The poor officer will no longer be allowed to carry pepper spray tell you there must not be much to report nowadays.
