ELGIN, SC – When two year-old Tyler Jacobson went missing for 12 hours in bitterly cold temperatures – there was one best friend he could count on.
In this case, however, his faithful companion had four legs and a very waggy tail.
Police found the toddler being guarded by the family Labrador after he wandered out the back door of his home in Elgin, South Carolina.
Tyler disappeared from his home while wearing nothing more than a diaper on Friday evening after his mother said he went to get some juice.
Police launched a huge search with dog teams and a helicopter but called it off in the small hours of Saturday morning.
Temperatures were around 40F as they abandoned the search.
They also questioned mother Jacklyn Jacobson, and her boyfriend Jose Gloria.
They started looking again early on Saturday and found Tyler behind a neighbor’s home.
He was accompanied by the unnamed family pet who apparently stayed by his side all night.
‘Just thinking that a dog would watch a baby over the night, it’s kind of like a movie instead of real life,’ neighbor Emily DuBose, told WIS TV.
‘I heard some barking early in the morning, but I didn’t really think about it, I just heard dogs barking.’
Fellow neighbor Linda Harr told WIS :Since he belonged to them, he must have followed them the whole way, so that’s very special.’
Sheriff Jim Matthews said: ’ Everybody was hollering for the kid and calling the baby’s name and never once did we hear a cry.
‘His mum was worried and the child upset and bringing them back together was just a joyful sight.’
Tyler’s father is serving in the U.S. Army but is on his way back to Elgin after the drama.
Neigbors said they didn’t go outside during the search because they thought officers were looking for a criminal.
