From 9/11 Heroes to Greedy Public Servants? No!

How times have changed. Remember 9/11? A mere 10 years ago, people were applauding cops and firemen as we went about our duties. Many of us were thanked for “being there.” Now what’s happening?

I went to WTC the day of the attack. I returned during the recovery — on my own time. Many of the people who responded developed long-term terminal illnesses. Some of those have died. For a short time, it was a good thing to be a cop or a fireman.

I haven’t changed. If the attacks occurred today, I would still rush in while millions rush out. The same goes for most of us – despite what the public thinks.

I’m also not “greedy.”

I agree that the costs have gone up. I will NOT, however, take responsibility for the atrocious mismanagement of the pension system by the government and municipalities.

I made my pension contributions while they stopped making them. I stood up and questioned the State when they took the money out of the system to use elsewhere. I railed against the “pension holidays” that allowed the lack of payments into the system.

I do not qualify for Social Security and am not permitted to go into a 401K. The pension system is all I have — except for welfare, and some of you undoubtedly would call me a leech if I ever went that route.

No one likes the way the economy has turned. I have family members suffering through this, as well. But, when the economy was gaining double-digit percentage points, my raises weren’t even close.

In plain language: While the private sector was getting 10-15% raises, I was getting 3-4%.

I also will not take responsibility for the disgraceful rise in health care costs. The insurance companies who back Christie are the ones responsible — but you don’t see him going after them for their outrageous rates, do you?

My union has already agreed to 0% increases and has given concessions to save jobs. I and many of my fellow public servants have said we’d be willing to discuss contributing toward my healthcare.

But nobody talks about that. We are just “greedy.”

When (not if) the next attack occurs, my brothers and sisters will be there, just like we are when you dial 9-1-1 or stop us on the street when you are in trouble.

Some of us still do it with a smile. All of us do it with pride in serving the public.

Don’t call me greedy. Call me Officer.

Officer Nick Loizzi has been with the Rutherford Police Department since 1987, and has served in various roles for PBA 300.

Robo and Oncethere ; I worked in the old days 1975 to 1986 when I was Disability Retired . A 22 man force that had their own Union without any affiliation outside unions. Since that time the department has mad radical changes to Mass Cop first then to "THE TEAMSTERS UNION" . The pay and benefits went trough the roof since joining. All on the backs of the Tax Payers just to pay for "UNION BOSSES OUTSIDE THE DEPARTMENT THAT WERE AT ONE TIME THE CRIMINAL THUGS WE USE TO ARREST".!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The average person has the luxury of forgetting the sacrifices and loss on september 11th great first responders allow this with their tireless vigilance and always being there for all who need them.

Unfortunately some of us have no choice when it comes to union membership, it is a condition of employment.

Dissagree with Robocop33 on this one. The anti- PD/FD letters to the editor by readers of the NY Daily News and the NY Post after Bloomberg went on his attacks were, for the most part,a blend of spite, jealousy and loathing. The same liberal citzens of NYC who recently cheered the protesters in Wisconsin were vehemently anti union in regards to their own first responders (many of whom have contracted illnesses from Ground Zero). As the 10th anniverary approaches it appears that the promise to "Remember the Heroes" has been forgotten.

Officer Loizzi, there is not much in your article that I can disagree with. I worked not far from Rutherford, New Jersey in Nassau County, New York. (Long Island) Like you, I benefited from a strong police union and was once a PBA rep. for my department. What I urge you to do here, is to separate yourselves, the police officers from these civilian unions. Please research the people behind these public service workers unions that are protesting. Many of these folks are members of organizations such as policecrimes.com and policecrimes.org. These individuals have zero use or respect for police officers and are using cops because of the symbol that we are at these union rallies. These individuals stand for everything that every cop has fought against in his entire life. Separate yourselves as I said, these folks do not have your best interest in mind, they only wish to use you. Let your city or county know that the only one that speaks for your union is your PBA. Don't let these other folks drag you down with them.

I do not for one minute think that the people out there think of Police Officers as being greedy public servants. This is what the media is putting out. They are the ones saying how all of this affects LE and FF's when it truth MOST of these union benefits are for the union bosses and that is what these elected Officials are going after. The Wi Governor signed the bill today taking away the collective bargaining for benefits today and not a peep has been said, especially by our President. The right for our brothers to bargain for salary is still intact and was never an issue anyway. 99% of these bills have nothing to do with FF's or LEOs but the media likes to throw that out there to get the people all riled up. What they need to do is to cut all of these upper management positions that do nothing except build their little empire, mostly in these teachers. Cops are doing their jobs and will be treated fairly and they do not need an AFL-CIO Union to represent them. They need to disassociate themselves with those types of unions anyway. If you feel the need for or want a small local union to address grievances, then do so and that is great. Just stay the hell away from this big unions who only care about themselves, power, and money for themselves.

We are loved 10% of the time and despised the other 90%. Oh how dumb sheep can be but as a sheepdog we have a higher understanding, common sense, and spirituatlity that allows us to protect and serve those who wish to harm us with words or weapons.

Very well said and oh so true! My Dept has no union, most of us do it for the pride of serving a few do it just for a "job". If money is anyones primary motivation they usually quit for the private sector and good riddance.
