LIMON — A standoff that began with the fatal shooting of a Limon police officer ended late Wednesday when the suspect was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

At a post-midnight news conference, State Trooper Heather Cobler said that officers were serving a warrant at a residence at the Wagon Wheel Mobile Home Park at about 6:10 p.m. when the man they were serving opened fire.

Officer Jay Sheridan, 27, who had been on the Limon police force for more than six years, was killed.

Two other officers, who were not identified, remained in a separate room in the mobile home and called for assistance.

Several law enforcement authorities — including deputies from Lincoln, Elbert and Douglas counties, and members of the Colorado State Patrol and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation — arrived at the scene.

At 10:40 p.m., Cobler said, SWAT officers from Douglas and Elbert counties entered the residence and found the suspect’s body. The two officers in the other room were unharmed.

Cobler said more information on the incident will be released later today.

Jim Hartwig, manager of the Wagon Wheel Mobile Home Park, said the neighborhood was evacuated about 6:15 p.m. About 20 residents were reported evacuated.

Hartwig said he had heard at least three shots fired.

Josh Wiedemann said he had just moved into the park Wednesday. He said he heard “a pop and a whiz,” and when he went outside, a law officer with a shotgun told him to get out.

Limon is about 90 miles east of Denver on Interstate 70.

Rest in peace Officer Sheridan, may God welcome you home with open arms and may He comfort the loved ones you leave behind.

This is turning out to be a very deadly year for law enforcement, stay safe out there brothers and sisters. Wear your vests, back each other up and train for the unthinkable because it is one "routine" call away for some of us. May God keep us safe and bring us home to our families at the end of our shifts.
