Obama: Keep US Agents Disarmed in Mexico

WASHINGTON, DC – There appears to be some light between President Obama’s position on arming Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents while in Mexico and that of Attorney General Eric Holder, the nation’s top law enforcement official, just three weeks after ICE agent Jaime Zapata was shot to death in northern Mexico with a gun smuggled in from the U.S.

After a White House meeting between Obama and Mexican President Felipe Calderon, Obama seemed to convey a reluctance to arm ICE agents while they are traveling in Mexico.

“Our job is to help with information, equipment, to help with coordination,” Obama told reporters Thursday. “We do not carry out law enforcement activities in Mexico. What we can do is make sure that our cooperation is strengthened and deepened over time and we’re constantly refining how we do that in a way that is respectful of Mexico.”

“I assure you that we will be examining all our options and protocols …,” he continued.

The killing of Zapata emboldened U.S. critics of Mexico’s drug policy and earlier this week seemed to have Obama administration officials considering arming U.S. agents working across the border to ensure their safety.

“We have to make sure that those kinds of incidents are not repeated and to the extent that that involves the potential arming of them, that’s something I think we have to consider,” Holder told a congressional panel this week.

Yet, by Thursday both Obama and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano appeared to play down the prospect of arming ICE agents while traveling in Mexico.

“The issue of agents and arming is something that should be discussed in a more classified setting than a public hearing,” Napolitano said in response to a question from Rep. Mike McCaul (R-TX). “It’s an issue that involves not just Mexico but other countries as well.”

I am amazed at how someone who NEVER was in the military can be called the "Commander in Chief". I am also amazed that the person in the White House wants US LEO's unarmed in a HOSTILE country. Mexico is in a civil war. War's aren't pretty - people get shot and killed. A uniform to a drug lord and a gang member is a WALKING target. PLEASE wakeup Mr. Obama or is it Mr. Sotero !

I agree, we need all our law enforcement officer's armed when working in any location, foreign or domestic... Let our President lead from the front if he does not want them armed......

Bump JP503... Why doesn't he disarm the secret service then? If ICE agents or any other LE agents don't need their weapons then by god his people don't need them either, whether in this country or another it's all the same to him. He's definitely no LEO supporter, just another tree hugger with rose colored lens on who thinks that nothing bad well befall anyone. I would take Bush back over him, at least Bush was a caring individual and not looking at us as his peasants all yearning for approval and handouts. Please pray that he does not get voted back into office.....

Listen, The protocol should be the safety and the right to protect our agents, and not allow them to be made marks for the cartels !! We already are coming under attack by politicians, with regard to our union rights, and now they want to take away the power to defend ourselves, in this "war on drugs/terror" !!

Send Obama to the front line and let him personally lead the unarmed officers. It would only take about 2 seconds for that spineless wonder to make a bee line back to the rose garden.

Its sad that the government has to discuss how to make US citizens safe on foreign soil instead of doing what ever it takes to insure they are safe...

gradyg. Sorry my friend but enough of trying to Blame Bush. President Bush has been out of power for two years completely and four years practically. It was a very poorly performing Congress that caused the recession lead by two Democrats, namely Dodd and Frank. None of this has squat to do with the current situation. You cannot blame Bush, or Clinton, or Bush or Reagan. It is on the shoulders of the current President, the one who has had this problem brought to his attention because of the fatal shooting of a Federal Agent in Mexico. It is Obama and that idiot Holder who are the ones that have refused to allow these Agents to carry weapons now that they have asked for said permission. As a military man you should know that the CO is the one that MUST be held responsible for the failure of any mission. That's the current CO, not the CO before him.

Was they carrying weapons before Obama became President if they wasn't it's not his fault but the previous Presidents fault. He will be re-elected in 2012 watch and see. It is going to take 10 to 20 years to undo what Bush did to this country, now everybody wants to blame Obama. The republican party is the reason this country is where it's at now. There was a surplus until Bush went on his spending spree on the wars that never should have been in the first place. Let the truth be told if you do not know you just don't know.
