Obama: Keep US Agents Disarmed in Mexico

WASHINGTON, DC – There appears to be some light between President Obama’s position on arming Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents while in Mexico and that of Attorney General Eric Holder, the nation’s top law enforcement official, just three weeks after ICE agent Jaime Zapata was shot to death in northern Mexico with a gun smuggled in from the U.S.

After a White House meeting between Obama and Mexican President Felipe Calderon, Obama seemed to convey a reluctance to arm ICE agents while they are traveling in Mexico.

“Our job is to help with information, equipment, to help with coordination,” Obama told reporters Thursday. “We do not carry out law enforcement activities in Mexico. What we can do is make sure that our cooperation is strengthened and deepened over time and we’re constantly refining how we do that in a way that is respectful of Mexico.”

“I assure you that we will be examining all our options and protocols …,” he continued.

The killing of Zapata emboldened U.S. critics of Mexico’s drug policy and earlier this week seemed to have Obama administration officials considering arming U.S. agents working across the border to ensure their safety.

“We have to make sure that those kinds of incidents are not repeated and to the extent that that involves the potential arming of them, that’s something I think we have to consider,” Holder told a congressional panel this week.

Yet, by Thursday both Obama and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano appeared to play down the prospect of arming ICE agents while traveling in Mexico.

“The issue of agents and arming is something that should be discussed in a more classified setting than a public hearing,” Napolitano said in response to a question from Rep. Mike McCaul (R-TX). “It’s an issue that involves not just Mexico but other countries as well.”

all of these agents have diplomatic immunity, so there is no issue there.

I sugget Congress defund the war on drugs campaign, in particular the funds sent to Mexico every year. I bet there'll be a change in "our options and protocals."

CBP Attache's and ICE Attache are armed in other countries, why not Mexico? I am sure the at least the CIA is armed in Mexico. They also have US Marshalls and the FBI in Mexico, are they not armed?

Remember, this is the same President who invited President Calderon to Washington to deliver a speech to Congress in which he complained thjat Arizona's illegal immigration law SB 1070 discriminated against Mexicans, and then encouraged brain dead members of Congress (mostly Democrats) to dumb to recognize when they're being insulted to spasmodically convulse into a standing ovation..

Clueless!...Hmm aren't we armed to protect ourselves from BAD GUYS? Maybe the USSS shouldn't be armed when they leave the county to protect our govenment officals. NOT!....I don't think anyone would go for that...!...ICE agents should not take Mexico assignments until this is worked out.

Why hasn't Congress presented articles of impeachment against Obama? It's obvious he and Holder have failed to uphold their oaths of office

Bloody disgrace, this is. Once again, officer safety is compromised for political pandering purposes. I don't know the specifics, nor do I want to, but I know bootlicking when I see it.

I agree with erosson27, "If our agents cant carry weapons then they should not work in mexico our agents are doing them a favor, no mote help or cooperation as long as our agents cant be safe." Personally, I don't care what Obama or Calderon say. I will be armed whenever I travel in Mexico.

I notice there is no mention in this article about ATF's "Operation Gunrunner," which facilitated the delivery of the gun that killed Agent Zapata, along with thousands of other guns into Mexico. According to information I have obtained, this illegal operation was sanctioned by the highest levels of the Obama administration's DOJ. Maybe this is why the possibility of arming ICE agents while traveling in Mexico is being played down by Obama and Napolitano.

I wonder if the president would be willing to tour the areas the agents are in and have Secret Service leave their weapons at home..........

You know Jim (robocop33) , I find it rather strange that someone who is depicting himself in a combat zone and carrying an M-4 24/07 would find fault with a similar situation of a Police Officer in a combat zone but "HE WOULD HAVE TO BE UNARMED ON THE BATTLEFIELD" ! Then on top of it all blaming someone who has no standing in the present day situation that was created by "THE PRESENT DAY LEADERSHIP"? Ge I wonder if .......................................

not choosing to arm our agents in mexico would be as bad as our "fearless leader" saying we can no longer be armed while on duty. this is ridiculous

How can you be "respectful" of a country where its residents DO NOT respect us by shipping their illegals, drugs, weapons, etc.....up north?
