Obama: Keep US Agents Disarmed in Mexico

WASHINGTON, DC – There appears to be some light between President Obama’s position on arming Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents while in Mexico and that of Attorney General Eric Holder, the nation’s top law enforcement official, just three weeks after ICE agent Jaime Zapata was shot to death in northern Mexico with a gun smuggled in from the U.S.

After a White House meeting between Obama and Mexican President Felipe Calderon, Obama seemed to convey a reluctance to arm ICE agents while they are traveling in Mexico.

“Our job is to help with information, equipment, to help with coordination,” Obama told reporters Thursday. “We do not carry out law enforcement activities in Mexico. What we can do is make sure that our cooperation is strengthened and deepened over time and we’re constantly refining how we do that in a way that is respectful of Mexico.”

“I assure you that we will be examining all our options and protocols …,” he continued.

The killing of Zapata emboldened U.S. critics of Mexico’s drug policy and earlier this week seemed to have Obama administration officials considering arming U.S. agents working across the border to ensure their safety.

“We have to make sure that those kinds of incidents are not repeated and to the extent that that involves the potential arming of them, that’s something I think we have to consider,” Holder told a congressional panel this week.

Yet, by Thursday both Obama and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano appeared to play down the prospect of arming ICE agents while traveling in Mexico.

“The issue of agents and arming is something that should be discussed in a more classified setting than a public hearing,” Napolitano said in response to a question from Rep. Mike McCaul (R-TX). “It’s an issue that involves not just Mexico but other countries as well.”

I think that Presidente Obama should tour Mexico without security, just to get a feeling for what it's like. You know "bond with the Workers" he's big into that you know.

If federal agents continue to not be armed in Mexico, they will become targets. Sooo not a good idea by Obama, the same guy who put porta-potties on a law enforcement memorial.

The President's people need to give him a reality check. He obviously has no clue what kind of risks the officers are taking.
I do agree with Secretary Napolitano that this needs to be a confidential discussion and decision, for the safety of the officers involved. Don't give the enemy any more information!
I know there are some PR aspects to this, but safety has to come first. Protect your people, Mr. President, and let them protect themselves.

rwohisein-Amen brother. That has been my contention for years.Saturate the border with troops and give them a lead lunch if they attempt to cross.Of course that's to simple for the Socialist dorks in D.C. to figure.Does anybody really believe this ignorant garbage would be taking place if we had a man at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue who had a pair.

Let me get this straight. He is the POTUS and he is not worried about sending in Americans "UNPROCTECTED" into Mexico????? Well then maybe he should set the example and lead the way then by going to Mexico himself without BODYGUARDS who carry GUNS!!! I wonder what he would say then??? The POTUS wants to be respectful of Mexico??? Maybe he should go the families of the Americans who were killed and be MORE RESPECTFUL TO THEM!!!!!

Sending unarmed agents into a country that is riddled with corruption and the cartels are better armed than our own police force in the US. I am glad I am not the only one who sees an obvious problem with this. Maybe instead of letting our people die in a cesspool of a country like Mexico, lets put armed guards on the border and shoot anyone who tries to cross? Maybe I am cynical, but by golly it just might work.

Wow I'm surprised with the President. I've always supported his actions up until this one. If that was me and they were going to send me across the border I'd say kiss my ass find someone else to to go across unarmed ...

Our Prez is so full of stupid it runs out of his ears, our agents in Mexico aren't enforcing laws true, but they should have the right/wherewithall to defend themselves - which the Federales seem incapable of doing..
