PALM BEACH COUNTY – A 15-year veteran Palm Beach County school district police officer was arrested Monday and charged with filing a false report about the theft of his weapon, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.
On Dec. 31, Leartis Vereen, 53, told deputies his Royal Palm Beach home had been broken into that same day and that his police-issued duty belt was among the items stolen, investigators said.
The belt contained a department-issued Glock handgun, handcuffs, a police radio, and [pepper] spray, the theft report stated.
However, a check of stolen firearms records showed the missing Glock model 22 with a serial number FXS360 was recovered during a robbery attempt and held as evidence by West Palm Beach police on Dec. 27, four days before Vereen reported it stolen, according to investigator Gabriel Carino.
Confronted with these facts, Vereen changed his story to say the weapon, belt and other equipment were actually stolen on Dec. 27 and that he had tried to recover them on his own by putting “word out on the street,” Carino said.
With no success, Vereen decided Dec. 31 to add the missing gun and duty belt to the list of other items stolen from his home, according to the incident report.
“He has been reassigned to a non-school, non-police position within the school [system] Police Department pending the outcome of the criminal case and the just-launched personnel investigation,” school district spokesman Nat Harrington said. “This is standard procedure for this type of allegation.”

hate to say it, but at this point it would look as if he is connected with the robbery somehow, very sad indeed.

While I do not know why he did what he did, he filed a false police report and completely lost his integrity not to mention committed a criminal act. While he may have had what he thought was a good reason to delay the reporting, he made a grave mistake and clearly was caught. This should stand as a warning to all of us to keep our integrity and never cover up a crime or even an indiscretion as the result could and probably will be worse than the punishment for the original incident...

Seems like he was worried about getting into trouble for the initial incident. If he didnt do anything wrong, why would he delay reporting it?? If someone broke into my house and took my service weapon, I as well as many of you would have made a report right away...Not making sense to me

I meant to say 'no ADDITIONAL criminal charges' will be placed on him. I stand corrected.

I suspect that if he wasn't involved in the robbery himself, that he knew who had taken his property and was just too embarrassed to come clean about the theft and the circumstances behind it. What a shame, to throw his entire career out the window...hopefully, no criminal charges will be placed on him as the investigation continues.

Definitely the worng way to go--your weapon is the one thing you can't hold off reporting, no matter how embarassing the theft makes you feel. And, wiyemb, you may be right about his involvement in the robbery, but as you said "let the facts do the talking". To say you believe he was involved in the robbery is conjecture, which we try to stay away from in law enforcement--too often if someone has a "belief" in how a case went down, they focus all their attention of proving that, and miss the actual facts that can solve the case because it doesn't fit their view of things...

Some good advice that was given to me once, bad news does not get better with time. As soon as your gun goes missing, do the right thing and report it.

If he told the truth from the beginning, he wouldn't be in the mess he is in.

If had just reported the gun stolen when it was stolen instead of trying to cover his behind. He would not be in the mess he is in now. Not very brite.
