WASHINGTON, DC – A D.C. police officer was hit by a car and seriously injured early Monday while investigating a deadly hit-and-run collision at the Key Bridge, police said.
The officer was reported in stable condition at a local hospital. Parts of Key Bridge were closed in both directions overnight, but all lanes appeared to be open by 5:30 a.m.
Police told WRC-TV (Channel 4) that the officer was investigating a hit-and-run accident that occurred shortly before midnight. A man walking a moped across the bridge was struck by an SUV and fatally injured, the television station reported. The driver of the SUV drove off, but was later apprehended on Interstate 270.
While the police officer was investigating the accident, he was struck by a Honda, police told WRC. The Honda remained on the scene.
