Sheriff's Cruiser, Firearm Stolen
Charleston Post Courier
February 11, 2011
BERKLEY COUNTY, SC – An unmarked Berkeley County sheriff’s cruiser that was stolen this evening in Goose Creek has been located, a spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office said.
The deputy who was driving the vehicle, sheriff’s Capt. Cliff McElvogue, was visiting a residence in Goose Creek and had gone inside for a moment, Moon said. When the deputy came outside about 7:55 p.m., the vehicle was gone.
The cruiser had at least one handgun inside it, Moon said.
The vehicle was recovered about 11 p.m. not far from where it had been stolen, Moon said. It was abandoned on Springhall Road in the Crowfield subdivision.
Deputies were processing the vehicle, Moon said. He did not know if the handgun had been recovered.

Better his cruiser than mine, what was he thinking leaving it running? ALWAYS take your keys!

This happened just up the road, and FYI, the handgun was found safe and secure in the glovebox, where the SO Capt had left it. Seems the car thief/joyrider realized after a minute or so that it was an unmarked police cruiser and bailed only a few blocks away from where he had grabbed it.
And a Crown Vic Interceptor only has the kill-switch if it's pre-2006, I believe, unless it's been added post-sale by the county maintenance guys.

in chicago we have to take our keys with us. we dont have cut off switches in our vehicles. so we cant even use that as an excuse as to why the vehicle was left running.

I thought most cruisers had cut-off switches. Every cruiser I've ever driven has. ALWAYS take your keys with you no matter what!!!
