Deputy's Wife Tries to Kill Him, Children in House Fire

GADSDEN, AL – The wife of an Etowah County sheriff’s deputy has been charged with attempted murder and arson after she allegedly set fire to the home she shared with her husband and two children, Sheriff Todd Entrekin said.
Danielle Joslyn Raley, 26, is charged with first-degree arson and three counts of attempted murder, investigator Jeremy Walker said.
A cash bond of $200,000 has been set.
Raley is accused of setting a fire on Jan. 31 at the family’s home on Croft Ferry Road in the Ball Play community.
The fire began inside the house when a set of curtains were lit with matches. One wall and the curtains were damaged.
Raley’s husband and two children were in the house at the time of the fire.
According to a report filed at the sheriff’s office about the fire, Jason Raley was asleep on the couch between 3 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. and awoke to the smell of smoke.
He jumped up and got his wife and kids out of the house and threw water on the fire to extinguish it, according to the report.
Danielle Raley was arrested on Monday after she confessed to investigators she set the fire.
“It’s a tragic situation that a mother would even think to do something to harm her family,” Entrekin said. “It doesn’t matter if it was a deputy sheriff’s wife. We’re going to treat this case like we would any other.”
Entrekin said that is one of the reasons the Etowah County Arson Task Force, which consists of several different fire and law enforcement agencies, was involved with the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office in the investigation.
“We wanted to make sure this was looked at with outside eyes,” Entrekin said.
Deputy State Fire Marshal Ray Cumby works with the Arson Task Force.
“We are pleased that this case was solved quickly and without injury to anyone,” Cumby said. “The cooperation between agencies involved in the Arson Task Force has proven beneficial to everyone. We will continue to prosecute anyone who is involved in setting fires and putting other lives at risk.”
A fire in 2009 that destroyed the Raleys’ home in Southside was ruled accidental after an investigation by the Arson Task Force, Entrekin said.
“If there is any information that comes up in the current investigation that warrants (it), an investigation could be reopened in the 2009 fire,” he said.

Guessing a combination of illnesses ( but not ruling out possible totally selfish motive) such as bipolar one, or sociopath. So sad whatever is the true reason that one individual can have such severe consequences in others' lives, not only their own. As always, tons of support to the innocent and the strongest quick justice for anyone not innocent. My 'gut feeling' is that she had no intention of harming herself but since I have totally no factual reason for any conclusion at all, it essentially means nothing. Just such a sad thing to see has happened.

i feel sorry for the deputy and his children having to go through an ordeal like this. i pray that they find the proper help for the woman and she gets well.. she will have to answer for her actions and attempted murder is a serious charge that she will have to deal with.

I pray that she gets help and I am glad that Deputy Raley and the children are ok... If the help fails and she really wants to kill herself, she will do it... I just hope the deputy and kids are not around when she does it...

Oh, my... so many questions to be answered. Those poor children!! Thankfully the quick actions of Deputy Raley spared any physical harm but wow how do you grow up and learn your mom tried to kill you while you slept. And maybe twice.

I. Think there is more to this. Maybe a lover or something in the wings. I'm glad she Was caught before what ever was in her warped mind. Hopefully the deputy had nothing to do with her action. Like maybe he had a lover or worse maybe abusive. Sorry but I have seen a lot as a law enforcer myself. Some element is definitely missing from this article.

I am glad my brother in blue and his children escaped unharmed are alright. Dealing with a wackjob, who happens to be your wife is no joke. I was sort of in his situation. However, I recognized the signs earlier and got out before the situation reached this level.

I just wonder what possessed her to do this. Why? Why set fire to the house that your husband and children are sleeping in? I am really glad that the Deputy and the children got out. And there was another fire before? Hmmm. It leaves much to wonder, doesn't it?

OMG, what is going on with society?!!! More people wanting to kill their families. I'm so glad no one got hurt. If she was angry at her family, murder is not the answer! Throw her in jail or send her to the funny farm and throw away the key forever! She shouldn't be part of regular society anymore.
