Deputy's Wife Tries to Kill Him, Children in House Fire
Danielle Raley

GADSDEN, AL – The wife of an Etowah County sheriff’s deputy has been charged with attempted murder and arson after she allegedly set fire to the home she shared with her husband and two children, Sheriff Todd Entrekin said.
Danielle Joslyn Raley, 26, is charged with first-degree arson and three counts of attempted murder, investigator Jeremy Walker said.
A cash bond of $200,000 has been set.
Raley is accused of setting a fire on Jan. 31 at the family’s home on Croft Ferry Road in the Ball Play community.
The fire began inside the house when a set of curtains were lit with matches. One wall and the curtains were damaged.
Raley’s husband and two children were in the house at the time of the fire.
According to a report filed at the sheriff’s office about the fire, Jason Raley was asleep on the couch between 3 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. and awoke to the smell of smoke.
He jumped up and got his wife and kids out of the house and threw water on the fire to extinguish it, according to the report.
Danielle Raley was arrested on Monday after she confessed to investigators she set the fire.
“It’s a tragic situation that a mother would even think to do something to harm her family,” Entrekin said. “It doesn’t matter if it was a deputy sheriff’s wife. We’re going to treat this case like we would any other.”
Entrekin said that is one of the reasons the Etowah County Arson Task Force, which consists of several different fire and law enforcement agencies, was involved with the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office in the investigation.
“We wanted to make sure this was looked at with outside eyes,” Entrekin said.
Deputy State Fire Marshal Ray Cumby works with the Arson Task Force.
“We are pleased that this case was solved quickly and without injury to anyone,” Cumby said. “The cooperation between agencies involved in the Arson Task Force has proven beneficial to everyone. We will continue to prosecute anyone who is involved in setting fires and putting other lives at risk.”
A fire in 2009 that destroyed the Raleys’ home in Southside was ruled accidental after an investigation by the Arson Task Force, Entrekin said.
“If there is any information that comes up in the current investigation that warrants (it), an investigation could be reopened in the 2009 fire,” he said.

I agree with Keiffer158's comment about "Lucyfindit." How do you automatically come to the conclusion this person was abused and not just some nut job?! I could care less about you seeing another possibility it is the insinuation and implication in the tone of your post that I have issue with. Besides that whatever your job entails does not require your services. I think they have that covered.

Lucyfindit, you sound like a womens lib man hater. Everytime a women tries to feloniously assault her husband/boyfriend it does not mean the man hit her first. Take off the oneway DV colored glasses.

I Lucyfindit, I understand what you are saying, however you can't look at everything through a DV filter. As an example, Susan Smith tried to use the abuse card also. The reality was she killed her children because she was manipulative, and wanted to get her way...nothing else mattered. Her children died because her boyfriend didn't want the responsibility for children who were not his and she wanted to get married. But at the same time she was sleeping with him, she was also sleeping with his father, her ex-husband and her step father. It's difficult to believe that women will be so quick to kill thier children, but it is getting more common to see that.

There is probably more to this story....abused women do crazy stuff as a cry for help and so do mental challenged women...Don't jump down my throat for seeing another possibility. I am a DV investigator.

This story is sickening and a crazy one at that. I guess the deputy did not have a clue that his wife may have set the first fire, I'm elated he and his children are safe and were unharmed by this deranged woman. This is terrible no matter what the outcome of the case is. Life the way he knew it will never be the same. It's much safer now he can now sleep with both eyes close.

I thank God everyone got out safely. I pray the lord have mercy on her, and continue to protect the deputy and the children. Let's all pray...

If this suspect alleges that she was an abused spous, then why did she include her kids in the murder attempt?
It doesn't wash. I'm thinking she's either flat out crazy or she has another man. The husband and kids were "in the way".

outohea - I am sure she will say she was beat/abused even if she wasn't. She admitted to setting the fire - with her kids in the house and hmmmm their first house burned down less then two years ago? I think at least one person need some help here - remember from what the story says she was still in the house and stayed there after she set the fire - I am glad everybody got out ok!

OK, outohea, I understand that it could be that she was being abused, however, referirng to the members on here as "nutjobs" probably wont gain you many friends here. The purpose of much of the site is for those in the LE community and supporters of it to have a place to share info and opinion. Besides, I haven't seen too many comments here that were that far out of touch with the relevance of the story. Just sayin....

I love all the comments people put without knowing anything about the case. hell, for all we know the deputy was abusing her and she thought this was her only way out (like the burning bed). Now, before any of you nutjobs come ramming down my throat with your nonsense I'm jus tthrowing that up there as a possibility simply becuase it happens. I'm just amused at some of the things said. It's not surprising that this stuff happens though, it occurs every single day. People are nuts. That's what makes us entertaining.

This is rather confusing to me. She set the fire in an attempt to kill the deputy and his kids but when he woke up to the smell of smoke, she was still in the house? Sounds like she intended to kill everyone in the house including herself. She needs some psychiatric help, I would think. No marriage could be that bad that she would kill herself too. I wouldn't rule out marital problems or financial gain but something is wrong here.
