Update: A man who kept police at bay for several hours after firing shots this morning is now in police custody, police said.

Detroit police tried for several hours to get the man to surrender after he apparently fired shots into the air around a home early this morning on Montrose on Detroit’s northwest side.

Police brought in armored vehicles and blocked off access to the area around 7 Mile and Greenfield. Detroit Police spokeswoman Sgt. Eren Stephens said the gunman surrendered without incident just after 8 a.m.

Officers had blared sirens and asked the man to come out of his home via public address systems in their vehicles.

Detroit Deputy Police Chief James Tolbert said at the scene that officers responded to reports of a man firing a gun, and they saw the man continuing to fire shots in the air around 4:30 a.m. today before he went into the home.

“It appears they were just random shots not directed at anyone,” Tolbert said.

No one was injured, he said.
