Detroit Police Release Video of Station Ambush

Detroit Police Release Video of Station Ambush

Detroit Free Press via YellowBrix

January 29, 2011

DETROIT – He appears calm as he walks into the police station, as if he belongs there.

He steps past vending machines, to the far side of the horseshoe-shaped front desk from the door. Lamar D. Moore is just out of the frame when he fires his first shotgun blast. Officers hit the floor and smoke curls into view.

The graphic surveillance video of Moore’s ambush on the Detroit Police Department’s Northwestern District station Sunday was released Friday, bringing into the public’s view the attack that left four officers injured and Moore dead.

It’s a video that shows a sudden, gruesome attack on police by a gunman implicated in an alleged sex crime and kidnapping. It also shows the heroics of Cmdr. Brian Davis, who engaged Moore in a point-blank shoot-off.

All four officers are recovering from their injuries.

“There were tremendous acts of heroism that rarely individuals get a chance to see,” Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee Jr. said in a video message. “Detroit police officers in action.” Rampage caught on video

It’s a normal Sunday at the Detroit Police Department’s Northwestern District station.

Cmdr. Brian Davis has come in to be briefed on a shooting.

He walks past shoe shiner Modreci Draper, who was there shining shoes for officers, and stops to talk with Sgt. Ray Saati behind the front desk counter.

As Officer David Anderson is standing near Draper, talking to Officer Theodore Jackson, the shadow of a man approaching the front door stretches across the floor of the lobby.

A gunfight is brewing.

And it’s all caught on video surveillance, released Friday by the Police Department.

Lamar D. Moore, a man implicated in a sex crime and kidnapping, launches a brutal attack on officers, injuring four.

From a camera view just over the desk, Moore is seen approaching the side of the desk farthest from the front door. Anderson walks over to Draper, who told the Free Press on Thursday that when he leaned down, as can be seen in the video, he was wiping salt from Anderson’s shoe.

they put in a medal detector the very next day! It is a shame that you have to do that but ppl are crazy nowadays. This POS 's family had the balls on the first day to deny their family member would or could have done this. They said he never even had a traffic ticket! Maybe he didn't, but he should not have handcuffed a 13 year old in the bathroom for days on end and sexually assaulted her!

a pure waste of society, why didnt the criminal just kill himself instead of shooting at cops? the city decided to place protective glass (only 50 years later) at our main desk. after seeing this video im very thankful for the recent improvement. im glad that none of my fellow brothers were seriously injured. Here's the scary part: THE GOVERNMENT STILL WANTS TO LAYOFF POLICE!!!!! How about we stop sending out money to other nations, and rebuild OURS!

OMG - pleased no officers died in this incident.
Open plan police stations are too dangerous, nearly all police stations in the UK are not open planned; this was mainly due to the IRA walking in to stations and leaving IED's on front counters at stations etc.......
When we had a high risk prisoner - we had to have bullet proof dividers in the front office, so we could hide behind them if anyone attempted to rescue the prisoner and shoot in to the office area - this should be in all stations, in all countries as standard.

What a horrific incident! You are supposed to feel safe at the Police Department and suddenly some waste of DNA opens up on all of you with a shotgun! The bravery of these Officers shows and I thank God that none of the Officers were killed and that they were able to put this waste down permanently. Remember to wear your vest at all times, even in the house and to always be aware of your surroundings and prepared to fight.

Also not saying this is the only station around like this, but EVERY police station should have buzzers and multiple entries to even get to the front desk, locked, protective glass, etc.. Everyone should know by now, as I mentioned in my previous comment, this stuff can happen anywhere, anytime. There have been WAY too many officer shootings and deaths the past 3-4 months. It seems it's only increasing as well. Be aware of your surroundings. I'm working a basketball game tonight in my local community, doesn't mean it's only going to be a basketball game. You never know. Again be safe out there!!

Justice prevails for moore(meaning he's dead). Thankfully all officers involved are recovering. I pray for the officers that are still recovering. God Bless and never become complacent in your jobs where ever you are or whatever you're doing. It can happen anywhere, at anytime and in the most unsuspecting places. Be safe brothers and sisters.

WOW. POS needed to be killed before he did this to someone else. Thank God no Officers died, that is a miracle considering the range. Prayers to the Officers for a FULL recovery.

Wow!! that was very scary. I am surprised that the dept. didn't have some type of shield between the officers and the public. Its sad these days that something like a barrier between the public and officers is needed. The local law enforcement center here in Greenvillle just put up a bullet resistant glass on top of the actual desk. Glad this idiot won't be around to do this again.

shows your reactions in such incidents will be from what you've been trained to do. I've watched this many times (being a police officer in the "D") and the (4) officers that were shot and injured were LUCKY that this POS didn't come to the precinct with his AK-47 they found in his house. The POS subject ran out of shotgun ammo and ran out of luck! This could have been so much worse! PROUD OF DPD this morning for all their actions in this gunfight!
