Detroit Police Release Video of Station Ambush

Detroit Police Release Video of Station Ambush

Detroit Free Press via YellowBrix

January 29, 2011

DETROIT – He appears calm as he walks into the police station, as if he belongs there.

He steps past vending machines, to the far side of the horseshoe-shaped front desk from the door. Lamar D. Moore is just out of the frame when he fires his first shotgun blast. Officers hit the floor and smoke curls into view.

The graphic surveillance video of Moore’s ambush on the Detroit Police Department’s Northwestern District station Sunday was released Friday, bringing into the public’s view the attack that left four officers injured and Moore dead.

It’s a video that shows a sudden, gruesome attack on police by a gunman implicated in an alleged sex crime and kidnapping. It also shows the heroics of Cmdr. Brian Davis, who engaged Moore in a point-blank shoot-off.

All four officers are recovering from their injuries.

“There were tremendous acts of heroism that rarely individuals get a chance to see,” Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee Jr. said in a video message. “Detroit police officers in action.” Rampage caught on video

It’s a normal Sunday at the Detroit Police Department’s Northwestern District station.

Cmdr. Brian Davis has come in to be briefed on a shooting.

He walks past shoe shiner Modreci Draper, who was there shining shoes for officers, and stops to talk with Sgt. Ray Saati behind the front desk counter.

As Officer David Anderson is standing near Draper, talking to Officer Theodore Jackson, the shadow of a man approaching the front door stretches across the floor of the lobby.

A gunfight is brewing.

And it’s all caught on video surveillance, released Friday by the Police Department.

Lamar D. Moore, a man implicated in a sex crime and kidnapping, launches a brutal attack on officers, injuring four.

From a camera view just over the desk, Moore is seen approaching the side of the desk farthest from the front door. Anderson walks over to Draper, who told the Free Press on Thursday that when he leaned down, as can be seen in the video, he was wiping salt from Anderson’s shoe.

Very happy these officers were able to defend themselves..makes me think of all the volunteer cops through out the various departments who wear the same uniform and .not trained and not allowed to carry ...they would not have had a chance on hell!

Gotta bump Robocop33 -- comment is right on target. Video would very much seem to show that two of the officers engaged the perp and that Cmdr. Davis was a true warrior and never backed down. Praying for a speedy and full recovery for the officers. Lots we can all learn from this scenario to say the least (both good and bad).

Holy moly brothers that is why I decided to become a professional firefighter so long ago because in the end you can dodge fire(most of the time)but you can't dodge a bullet very easily I am so proud of those officers and am soooo happy they are alive and the d-bag is dead!

I am surprised the station had open access to civilians. Even the Kent and Renton PDs have controlled access. Knowing the crime rate in Detroit, the security there was a bit too relaxed. I am glad the officers are recovering.
    Praying for their speedy recovery

Damn!!!! Proves what I've always believed; Police stations should never, under any circumstances be open for the public can simply walk in. Maybe this lesson will teach us to take the precautionary measure necessary to prevent incidents like this one.

Thank God that these brothers and sisters in blue are still alive. I hope they have a quick recovery and will value their time with their loved ones. This video shows that the police are fighting a war against criminals that have more rights than we do. We need the individuals running this country to wake up and realize that times have changed and the police need to be protectors of society and not public servants. Hope this POS is an example to all to stay alert and stay alive.

Just watched this; makes me nauseated, literally. So close to home, so real, so sickening. Amazing that none of the officers were killed in that mess and for that we're all very grateful.

First I would like to say SUPERIOR job by those officers and thank GOD "we" triumphed over this low life.
The entry of my police headquarters is set up in a similar manner: wide open to the public. At what point in time are measures going to be taken to further protect US from situations like this. As police officers, we are more vulnerable to attacks such as these than the average citizen. Bank tellers have measures of security to protect them - why don't we?! Crime against cops, as evident in the new year and our brothers and sisters being murdered, is at an all time high. We may be "protectors of society" but the society we are protecting continue to restrict and hinder our ability to keep the streets safe by twisting and turning the foundation of the constition to protect the very people that are making our society a war zone. May God be with each of us every minute of every day, giving us the strength and ability to continue fighting each day. Be safe, and watch you and your partners back.
