REMBERT, S.C. — An on-duty Sumter police officer has died in a head-on crash on U.S. 521 in Sumter County.

Sumter police said in a news release that 39-year-old Cpl. Charles Nesbitt Jr. died at the hospital about an hour after the wreck Friday afternoon.

Authorities say Nesbitt and another officer were driving south on U.S. 521 near Rembert when they collided head on with an SUV. The second officer was treated and released, while the condition of the driver of the other vehicle has not been released.

A special team of state troopers is investigating the wreck.

Sumter police say Nesbitt was 10-year veteran of the force and worked in the warrant division.
