CAMDEN — The anti-crime group Guardian Angels said today that it will send members to Camden just before police layoffs take effect.

The group says 40 members from New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania will arrive in Camden on Sunday.

Facing a budget crunch, the city expects to lay off up to one-fourth the government work force, effective Tuesday. About half the 370-member police force could be laid off, though the exact number will depend on whether police unions accept concessions.

Police Chief Scott Thomson has said he will reconfigure the force to maintain patrols. Other area police agencies, such as the Camden County Sheriff’s Office, have been in talks to help more in the city.

Studies consistently find Camden, with open-air drug markets in several neighborhoods, to be among the nation’s most crime-ridden places.

Thomson said he didn’t mind any help from the Guardian Angels.

“Folks with good intentions are always welcome on our streets,” he said.

Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa said in a release today that the patrols in Camden will run from 11 a.m. until midnight.

The group went into Newark in November when there were police layoffs there.

Kudo's to The Concept of Helping out, It's Admirable. However, When I read the Article, I Don't look too Closely at the Picture of Curtis Sliwa proposing to Save the City of CAMDEN NJ. I may just turn into a PILLAR OF SALT. The Officials Cutting the Budget, can Accept the Angels, AARP Cards, and Utilize them at the Places where THEY Reside. Using the G.A.'s should only be done if all other efforts have been exhausted. Although I'm sure the (GA's) intentions are good, I Think this the Intent of this Picture is nothing less than a Stunt and Smoke Screen to cover up Laying Off HALF of Camdens Police Force. Bringing the G.A.'s into Crime Riddled Camden NJ(by Lakeland), is like bringing a Knife to a Gunfight. JMO

Just more innocent civilians are going to get hurt. This group is great when it comes to neighborhood watch type duties but they cannot apprehend or arrest anyone and going into these trouble areas of Camden is just allowing them to get hurt. Hell if the criminals are shooting at Cops in these areas i wonder what they will do to these people? Hope everything comes out good with the negotiations.

Unless these folks are certified police officers, I'm not seeing the solution.
