First Surgery Completed on Deputy Shot in the Face

Associated Press

January 14, 2011

LOS ANGELES—An official says surgeons may yet be able to save the eye of a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy who was shot in the face during a confrontation with a gang member.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Nicole Nishida said Thursday that Deputy Mohamed Ahmed was coming out of sedation after the first of what is expected to be a series of operations to repair his shattered face.

Ahmed was shot while patrolling with his training officer Tuesday night in the City Terrace area.

Sheriff Lee Baca has said the bullet affected Ahmed’s left eye and lodged in the right side of his face.

Nishida says surgeons did not remove Ahmed’s eye, which she said was good news for the deputy.

The gunman was fatally shot by the training officer. Authorities identified him as 37-year-old Nestor Torres of East Los Angeles.
