A mugshot just released of Jared Lee Loughner, the 22-year-old man accused of the attempted assassination of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and the killing of six others in Tucson, has become a focal point for the strong reactions felt across the United States and even global community after the weekend violence.
The mugshot, which shows Loughner staring straight into the camera with an unsettling smirk on his face, has been splashed across the front pages of American and international newspaper websites. As this is being written, it appears as the lead photograph on the NYTimes.com and LATimes.com slideshows and on the front page of WashingtonPost.com, BBC News, Yahoo News, The Huffington Post, The Times of London, The Daily Telegraph and other top news sites.
Loughner appeared in a federal courtroom in Phoenix Monday with his lawyer Judy Clarke. The college dropout faces two federal murder charges and three attempted murder charges. Magistrate Judge Lawrence Anderson called Loughner a “danger to the community” and ordered him held without bond. Rep. Giffords remains hospitalized in critical condition after being shot in the head.
In the photograph, released by the Pima County Sheriff’s Forensic Unit, light shines off Loughner’s bald head. He has freckles and what looks like the tracings of a black eye. What makes the image striking is not the face itself, but the look the young man conveys. He grabs the viewer with his eyes, looking straight ahead and not backing down or showing any sign of shame or remorse. Viewing the image — and knowing what the subject is accused of doing — leaves many viewers wondering if the man is mentally ill.
On the social networking site Twitter, the mugshot has been discussed at length with people calling it “creepy” and “eery” and others pleading with the media to stop showing the photograph.
One person wrote: “Have yall seen this Jared loughner mugshot??? My god… Keith olbermann, please stop showing that joint. I am all types of creeped out.”
Another wrote, “Jared lee loughner’s mugshot will forever haunt me in my dreams.”
Another called it “one of the most disturbing things I’ve ever seen.”
What are your thoughts on the image? Why do you think it causes such strong reactions? Should the media limit their use of the image?

Seeing this picture reminds me of another deranged killer that thought it was his given rite to cause the devastation that this kid did. Charles Manson. I personally do not think this guy is mentally ill. I think he has been planning this for a long time and has taken the steps to set up an insanity defense in the event he didn't get killed in the process. I do not think the press should give this guy anymore face time. Each and every time they do, they inadvertently glamorize this guy to all the other deranged extremists out there looking to make a name for themselves. It would be great if the next time we heard this kids name or saw his picture, it was to let everyone know that he was either killed in the kitchen of the prison or the state did us all a favor and put a needle in his arm. The only thing better than the needle for this guy is have him look at the family members of each of the victims as they put a gun to his head, pull the trigger, and they will have the last laugh.

Giving this subhuman monster the death penality is a given. Giving him the needle is the easy way out for him, a good ole fashion neck tye party in a public place would be more suitable. Hearing that a yard full of inmates used him as a pin cushion would nice and painfull. Many years ago, a jailer could have smacked that smugg look off of his face and not a word would have been said about it.

Yes, he definitely looks like he is well please with himself and his actions. Too bad premeditated murder is a death penalty offense. The fact that he went back to his car and got a gun to come back and shoot people with shows he was well aware of his actions and planned to kill those people. No pity, mercy or remorse from him, none should be shown to him, get him out of polite society by the most expedient means possible.

Last night I saw Katie Curik(sp) talk with the doc and his wife who where on the scene. Listening to how the doc talked he sounded like a trauma doc. THis means he has seen it all and even in his training it still shoook them tothe core. That is powerful to shack up a trauma doc. Just an observation to how horrible this act was. What a pathetic excuse for a human being the shooter was. I will not give him the pleasure of even using his name.

As for my thoughts.....he is very pleased with himself for what he has done. Yes he is mentally ill and quite insane BUT, from the reports about his writings it is doubtful that he is legally insane when it comes to criminal behaviour as he did know that what he was doing was wrong and that he could actually get the death penalty for his actions. That knowledge and the fact that he planned this with that knowledge precludes the insanity plea. Again, he is very pleased with himself and thinks he is so much better and wiser than the rest of us. Solution, kill him.
