A mugshot just released of Jared Lee Loughner, the 22-year-old man accused of the attempted assassination of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and the killing of six others in Tucson, has become a focal point for the strong reactions felt across the United States and even global community after the weekend violence.
The mugshot, which shows Loughner staring straight into the camera with an unsettling smirk on his face, has been splashed across the front pages of American and international newspaper websites. As this is being written, it appears as the lead photograph on the NYTimes.com and LATimes.com slideshows and on the front page of WashingtonPost.com, BBC News, Yahoo News, The Huffington Post, The Times of London, The Daily Telegraph and other top news sites.
Loughner appeared in a federal courtroom in Phoenix Monday with his lawyer Judy Clarke. The college dropout faces two federal murder charges and three attempted murder charges. Magistrate Judge Lawrence Anderson called Loughner a “danger to the community” and ordered him held without bond. Rep. Giffords remains hospitalized in critical condition after being shot in the head.
In the photograph, released by the Pima County Sheriff’s Forensic Unit, light shines off Loughner’s bald head. He has freckles and what looks like the tracings of a black eye. What makes the image striking is not the face itself, but the look the young man conveys. He grabs the viewer with his eyes, looking straight ahead and not backing down or showing any sign of shame or remorse. Viewing the image — and knowing what the subject is accused of doing — leaves many viewers wondering if the man is mentally ill.
On the social networking site Twitter, the mugshot has been discussed at length with people calling it “creepy” and “eery” and others pleading with the media to stop showing the photograph.
One person wrote: “Have yall seen this Jared loughner mugshot??? My god… Keith olbermann, please stop showing that joint. I am all types of creeped out.”
Another wrote, “Jared lee loughner’s mugshot will forever haunt me in my dreams.”
Another called it “one of the most disturbing things I’ve ever seen.”
What are your thoughts on the image? Why do you think it causes such strong reactions? Should the media limit their use of the image?

Just what he wants. To exercise more fear in people from even behind bars. Not scary at all just pathetic.

BUMP TheRealist.
My wife watched the news and the look from Jared Loughner scared the crap out of her. She feels bad about the victims.
I sure hope that the courts can get rid of this guy. As far as the parents go, I hope that they can cope with this and I also hope the media will decided to stop harassing everyone...

Quick, hook him up to old sparky while his head is already shaved. Just give me notice so I can run through my house, unplug everything and turn out my lights to give them extra juice. As mentioned, the damage of this POS reached beyond his victims (and may god bless them), it branched out to his family. They are now known as the family of a murderer and nothing more. It is now their legacy that will be carried on throughout time. Upon their introduction, there will be no "hello, how are you?" It becomes and will be "your related to that guy who killed those people in AZ!" And nothing more....

Agree with all. He's a creepy one and hopefully Justice will fully prevail in this matter. No one can possibly believe that either side of the Political spectrum had anything to do with this as is being said.

Well, Jared Laughner is under a no bond, and that is a good thing! But, I kinda have some sad feelings for his family. I saw his father on the Morning Show today and you could see it in the boy's father's face. The man had no explanation, appeared very remorseful, and imbarrassed for what happened with the shooting. The kid has put the hex on his whole family. And that, is sad. Probably never know the whole story but, I think his father is in bad shape because I got the impression that he would have done whatever he could to stop this incident. Can you imagine how, if he is, coping with this incident and the media coverage. It will haunt all of their family for the rest of their lives because of the actions of this fool.

Bump Baxter2! He is crazy as a bedbug but not legally insane and frankly I don't really care one way or the other. We know he did it so just take the waste of DNA out back, put a bullet in it's brain and then burn it and scatter the ashesand remove his name for all public records and make him Mr. X.

This guy is solely responsible....not talk radio, not partisan politics, not the government. This killer is responsible for his crimes. Hold him accountable by charging him, bringing him to trial, convicting him, and then follow that up by swiftly executing him and putting him out of his misery. The smirk on his face will disappear then for sure.

When I first saw this mugshot, I didn't know who it was and the the first thin gout of my mouth to my wife was "That guys going to murder somebody someday." Still can't explain why that was my first thought. I just found the photo to be disturbing. This guy was obviously a nut job. I'm now getting tired of hearing the politicians not letting a "crisis go to waste". One nut job goes on a killing spree and Congress wants to ban words and symbols (screw the First Amendment) and add firearms restrictions (screw the Second Amendment). I've got a better idea. We need to stop being politically correct, and allow the authorities to legally be more proactive in preventing crimes like this. Every time there's a mass shooting we hear about all of the warning signs that everyone knew about, but no one in a position to help legally could because the nut job "hasn't broken any laws yet." There has to be a middle ground between incarcerating/committing every disturbed person and just letting them walk the streets without the assistance they need.
