It is for the reasons in this article that Washington state preempts all regulations and is the sole rule making authority as far as firearms are concerned. If something like this were to happen in WA, the state has a preemption clause in the RCWs that immediately renders the harsher rule or regulation null and void.

If the policy or protocol of the university is in violation of established state law then they had an obligation to bring it to the attention of lawmakers and others who needed to know about it. Colleges, universities and the media need to remember they are not above the law and they can't go around making up policies that impose stricter or harsher penalties for something than the law allows, especially if the person in question is not breaking that law to begin with.

This is the USA not Nazi Germany.
