Their protest should be centered around the fact that the person did not comply with a lawfull commands by the officers and ran. There are consequences for bad behavior.

"The family has done their own investigation and has talked with a witness who says it happened differently from the way it has been reported,"
OK then, end of case, end of story. I am sure that the family's "Investigation" was complete and thorough and that they had ALL of the FACTS before coming to their conclusion. If not, then their conclusion is flawed and worthless. Let the official investigation run its course and then the truth will be known. Far too often in these situations the "Victim" turns out to be the aggressor that caused the situation to escalate and the supposed "Witnesses" are later found to be either lying or far less than credible.
