East St. Louis Laying Off 16 Officers

Associated Press

December 31, 2010

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. — The newly approved city budget in East St. Louis calls for laying off 34 municipal employees, including 16 police officers.

The East St. Louis City Council unanimously voted Thursday to accept the nearly $62 million budget, but several councilmen tell the Belleville News-Democrat the three-hour meeting was heated at times. Once councilman says he felt potentially threatened during one break by a high-ranking police officer who reportedly resented remarks the councilman had made on the floor.

Besides laying off the 16 police officers, the new budget also calls for a delay in calling some firefighters back to work, plus laying off four public works employees, one jailer and one full- and one part-time telecommunicator.

I wonder how many of those sitting up in City Hall were laid off or how many perks these Councilmen had to give up? None I'll wager. The only reason this Councilman felt threatened is because he knew he was wrong. He should feel threatened but not by the Police, but by the bad guys who will be flocking to East St Louis!

    E. St. Louis will suffer significantly with this loss of officers on the road. Tough place to work!

The last thing east St.Louis needs is less Police. That is a fairly high crime area.
