Detectives Shoot Man Who Rammed Their Cruiser; Kill Suspects Dog

UPPER DARBY, PA — A wild scene unfolded Thursday evening in South Philadelphia when police shot a man in one hand after he rammed his pickup truck into their unmarked car, authorities said.

The driver’s dog, which was in the passenger seat, was killed when the two detectives from Upper Darby opened fire, said Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael J. Chitwood.

Around 6 p.m., the detectives went to the 300 block of Winton Street in South Philadelphia to arrest a man wanted on charges of violating at least two protection-from-abuse orders in Upper Darby, Chitwood said.

The detectives took the man, whose name and age were not available, into custody without incident, Chitwood said.

However, a neighbor who appeared to be intoxicated got into the truck to go after the officers, Chitwood said.

At Broad Street and Oregon Avenue, the truck crashed into the front of the police car, Chitwood said.

The officers got out and the driver tried to ram them again, Chitwood said. The detectives opened fire, striking the driver in the hand and killing the dog.

The driver’s name and age were not available.

The driver, who was hospitalized, faces numerous charges, Chitwood said. The detectives and the first man they arrested were not injured.
