Officer, 2 Others Dead After Domestic Dispute
Associated Press
December 29, 2010
ARLINGTON, Texas — A suburban Dallas police officer and two others were found shot to death at an apartment complex Tuesday, shortly after the officer responded to an emergency call about a domestic disturbance.
Dispatchers received a call about shots fired at the apartment complex in Arlington shortly after an officer arrived to respond to the domestic disturbance call, police spokeswoman Tiara Richard said. Arlington is a suburb between Dallas and Fort Worth.
Additional police responded to the second call and found the body of their fellow officer and two others inside an apartment. Officials did not release the identities or ages of any of the victims.
It is unknown if the suspect was among the dead, Richard said, but there was “no indication there is anyone at large.”
The apartment complex was on lockdown and residents were told not to return to their homes until Wednesday.
“It is still early in the investigation and officers are in the process of determining what actually occurred,” Officer Zhivonni McDonnell said in a statement.
It was the second time in a year that an Arlington police officer has died in the line of duty. In January, Officer Craig Story, 34, was killed when his motorcycle collided with a school bus.
“Any time you lose an officer in the line of duty . . . it’s hard on the department,” Richard said. “This is hard on our city and our community.”
Mayor Robert Cluck released a statement saying he was “shocked and saddened” by the shooting.

As for Nettles--the dead man seemingly behind it all--he's a Washington felon with three kids; an unemployed sheet metal and construction worker from Tacoma, he'd supposedly come to Texas to find some work.
He's a sex offender registered in Texas for a child rape conviction from Tacoma. The AP lists his extended rap sheet as including: domestic violence, burglary, failure to register as a sex offender and possession of a firearm.
The Times also reports that Nettles was arrested for assaulting Carter and her mother back in September and was out of jail on bond at the time of the alleged massacre.
He was out on $5k bond at the time (from other sources)
The Arlington Star-Telegram has a profile on Smith here and more about Nettles' past here

After reading all about the cowardly perp, I cannot fathom why he was even out on the streets on $5k bond, especially, as a registered sex offender.
Arlington police officials said Smith, who had been an officer since February, was responding to a routine domestic violence call that didn’t include an indication that Nettles was in the area or had a gun. Under those circumstances, the call required only one officer, the officials said.
“From what we know, that type of call would be a low priority,” Chief Theron Bowman said.
Nettles was arrested by Arlington police in September for allegedly assaulting Carter’s sister and her mother, Richard said. He was out on $5,000 bail, and his case was still pending, she said.
The arrest warrant affidavit said the alleged assaults were precipitated by Carter’s mother refusing to allow her daughter to date Nettles after learning he was a registered sex offender.
According to the affidavit, Carter’s mother claimed Nettles tried to choke her and throw her over a railing. She said Nettles threatened to kill her and her husband.
The affidavit, prepared by an Arlington police detective on Sept. 16, said Nettles had convictions for rape of a child, domestic violence, burglary, failure to register as a sex offender and possession of a firearm.
Richard said Nettles registered as a sex offender in Arlington in August for an offense that occurred in Washington state.
Police also investigated a report from Carter in August that Nettles had made harassing phone calls, Richard said. That inquiry did not result in criminal charges.

Obviously there is always safety in numbers, but not always possible. We only have 3 single cars running, when they are tied up on arrests, accidents, or whatever it's hard for those hard charging and caring officers to stop and wait around the corner for back up while someone is in need. But fellow patriots please do, You getting hurt or killed doesn't help the hundreds more you will surve in your career. That's what I will discuss at roll call today, how about you?

RIP officer smith.
Whay was a rookie 10 days out of field training going to a domestic where an assault had allready taken place by herself? Even best case scenario a senior officer should have been with them as a 2nd no matter what.

What a shame, would really like to know what went down in the apartment. I agree one officer is not enough on a domestic call, they can go south in seconds. I am not Monday Morning quarterbacking the officers call, just a opinion. Every situation we go to is differen't and all have the potential for a negative outcome....Just a shame to read about it, but knowledge is power and the more we learn the stronger we all become. Rest in Peace brother, prayers to your friends and loved ones......you will be missed...
