Deputy Under Investigation for Allegedly Selling Drugs to Inmate

Associated Press

December 22, 2010

NEWPORT, Tenn. (AP) — A Cocke County deputy is under investigation after Sheriff Armando Fontes said the deputy sold drugs to a jail inmate.

The Knoxville News Sentinel reports that George Trent had worked with the sheriff’s department as a corrections officer for just more than a month.

Fontes said his office received a tip on Friday morning that the 33-year-old Trent was selling prescription pills to inmates. Deputies then gave an inmate bait money to solicit Trent for drugs.

Fontes said Trent sold the inmate a 30 milligram Roxycodine pill. Trent was fired that day.

The newspaper could not reach Trent for comment.

Trent was not arrested, but his case will go before a grand jury next month. If indicted, he’ll likely face felony charges.
