Robbery Suspect Kills Pursuing Police K9
Associated Press
December 01, 2010
GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, N.J. — Authorities in New Jersey say a robbery suspect killed a police dog by throwing it into traffic.
Gloucester Township police say the 3 1/2-year-old German shepherd named Schultz was trying to apprehend the man around 7:15 p.m. Tuesday. Police say the man grabbed the animal and tossed him onto the busy roadway, where it was struck. The suspect ran off.
Police Chief Harry Earle says the man was one of two people suspected of robbing a local restaurant. Both men remained at large Wednesday.
Further details on the encounter and the search were expected to be announced at a news conference Wednesday afternoon.

Ironically, I was searching Google for protocol at police funerals as it pertains to the family escort when I came across this website. Looks good and will be on here more often.
Having said that, on behalf of the Gloucester Twp PD and the handlers family, we greatly appreciate the prayers and words of support.
I was first alerted to this job by a detective while I was off duty and out to dinner. All he said was there was a robbery, the K9 tracked and bit the suspect but was struck by a car, can't find the dog and the suspects are still at large. As I responded, a sicking feeling came across me as I heard the handler call dispatch reporting he found his dog deceased.
For the next 3 1/2 hours numerous officers, both on and off duty from numerous jurisdictions, responded and ultimately the suspect was found suffering from injuries received by the dog, the stickers and bushes he crawled through and the vehicle that hit him too. It should be noted, and the handler wanted everyone to know, that Schultz did his job to the very end. He grabbed the suspect at the base of an embankment but the suspect was able to drag him up the embankment and onto the shoulder of the highway. Once there, the suspect began to swing his arm back and forth to get Schultz to break off but to no avail. This action caused Schultz to be placed into the path of an oncoming vehicle. The impact also dragged the suspect into the side of the car where he was sideswiped and injured. The suspect was able to flee across the highway but was captured as a result of the perimeter that was established. The other suspect was captured later that morning. Hopefully this brief description answers some questions people may have.
As I have said, we greatly appreciate the words of support that have been posted on this website as it will help us get through this difficult time. Stay safe. Capt. JW

What ticks me off is that if this were a civilian dog the SOB would get sentenced as if he had killed a relative of the judge!

It's sad to say that the courts won't give him what he deserves. He deserves to be charged with capital murder, just as if he killed any other officer. As I said, sad to say, but it won't happen. RIP Officer Schultz.

RIP Officer, Prayers to the handler and his Family over this tragic loss, Lest we forget that even though K-9's are dogs, that they are indeed officers.I hope and pray that the man who did this to you resisted arrest and was able to be "subdued" by your handler before being put into custody. 10-42 Officer Schultz we have the watch now.

RIP K9 officer Schultz. Too bad you did take off this guys balls before he tossed you into traffic. Maybe a rabid pit bull will inflict the demanded justice. By the way you were so much better looking than this piece of crap who took your life. What a looser.

How horrible. Prayers to the handler and death to the suspect. I can't ever imagine someone doing this to one of my K-9's. He would never have run off that is for sure. Throw him in front of a tractor trailer so he can go to hell knowing what that poor pup went through.
