Cops: Armed Man in Shootout With LI Officers

WEST BABYLON, N.Y. — Police say firefighters investigating a blaze at a house on Long Island fled the home when they encountered a man with a shotgun who then got into a shootout with police and was wounded.
The unidentified man was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip. He was listed in critical condition late Saturday night.
Suffolk County police say firefighters responding to a report of a house fire on Fourth Street at about 6:35 p.m. entered the home, where the man was wielding the weapon.
The firefighters fled and police followed the man after he emerged from the house.
Gunfire was exchanged at a nearby intersection, and the man was struck.
Police say the incident is being investigated.
