Two Portland Officers Arrested for DUI

Associated Press

November 17, 2010

PORTLAND, Ore. — Portland Police Bureau spokeswoman Lt. Kelli Sheffer says two Portland officers have been arrested for investigation of drunken driving.

She says Officer Joshua Sparks was stopped on the night of Nov. 6 by a Washington State Patrol trooper who clocked him at 72 mph in a 60 mph zone on Interstate 205 in Clark County, Wash.

On Sunday, Officer John Shadron was arrested by Gresham police after a collision with another vehicle. No one was injured.

The spokeswoman says the officers have been placed on desk duty pending the outcome of their cases and an internal review. Both men were off-duty when they were arrested.

This is embarrassing and a black eye for all law enforcement, not just these officers and this department. The Potland Police Bureau has had more than its share of black eye incidents lately. These officers know better and have dealt with drunks, DUII's and the aftermath left by them. This is inexcusable and I have no mercy for them.

Any police officer or deputy sheriff that appreciates their job realizes that the cost of DUI does not outweigh the risk of getting arrested and terminated from their position.
12 MPH over the limit and and a collision for the 2nd officer. Both incidents happened on the same department. This does not reflect very well on that police department!!! EMBARRASING!

Understand that I DO NOT think any Officer should drink at any bar and if in a resturant then yes, limit it to one drink. I also think the BEST policy is not to drink and second best, only at home and still only one or two.

Very sad that this may be career ending for them, but they should have known better and not have taken the chance. As others have said and I practice, drink at home or have someone drive you home...

One drink with a meal should be your max. A Jack and Seven at home is the safest bet and the least expensive.

This is my rule of thumb: One drink, take a cab!!!! It works every time! Simple!!!!!!

A Police Officer's conduct should be an example for the rest of the community. If your going to drink, then don't drive. Have a designated driver or call a cab. C'mon guys...

Robocop33, as an officer (or just anyone) I would say just keep it at one, period. Have a good beer (specifically a pint) with a meal, then call it good. If people have to start thinking about how many hours and how many drinks, there's always a chance of miscalculation. This is of course assuming there is no designated driver.

I hate to see those two officers get into trouble. We do have to have a higher standard being cops. God knows we all need a drink in our line of work sometimes. But, we have to be careful.

The sole reason I don't drink at bars anymore. I'll enjoy my JD at home in good company.
