AVENAL, Calif.—At a time when many police departments are facing cutbacks, the Kings County city of Avenal is opening its own police department.

During a ceremony Friday about 100 citizens and local officials turned out to celebrate the new Avenal Police Department.

The Hanford Sentinel reports that the department opens 31 years after the city first incorporated.

Earlier this year city officials moved to drop a long-standing $1.7 million annual contract with the Kings County Sheriff’s Department for law enforcement services.

The first of the 14 newly sworn officers will hit the streets of Avenal at the stroke of midnight Monday.

Avenal, incorporated in 1979, is a community of about 15,000 people about 70 miles southwest of Fresno.
