RIVERSIDE, Calif. — California authorities are looking for a big-rig truck driver accused of killing a Riverside police officer during a gunfight.
Roadblocks went up Monday as a dragnet continues. The Riverside Press-Enterprise says some semis have had to park and can’t make deliveries.
Police Chief Sergio Diaz tells the paper that Officer Ryan Bonaminio stopped a truck for a suspected hit-and-run accident shortly before 10 p.m. Sunday.
The chief says the driver got out and ran into Fairmount Park and the officer ran after him.
Lt. Leon Phillips tells The Associated Press that the suspect and officer had a gunfight and the officer took at least one bullet. The four-year police veteran died at a hospital.
The trucker drove off.
RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) — Police say a gunman shot and killed a Riverside police officer during a foot chase through a city park late Sunday night.
Lt. Leon Phillips says the shooting came after the officer stopped a suspected hit and run driver on Market Street about 10 p.m. The suspect then fled on foot from his vehicle and into nearby Fairmont Park.
Phillips tells The Associated Press that the officer gave chase and both the suspect and the officer exchanged gunshots. The officer was hit by at least one bullet and was rushed to a hospital.
He says the officer “died of his injuries.”
Phillips says police were still out in force well after midnight searching for the gunman but they have “very limited information” other than he is a male in dark clothing.
The officer’s name wasn’t released.
