NEW ORLEANS – A Marine from Texas survived combat in Iraq only to be murdered in the French Quarter — stabbed to death even as he wore his dress-blue uniform complete with battle commendations pinned to his chest.
Sgt. Ryan Lekosky and his wife were wrapping up an evening celebrating the service’s 235th birthday at a formal ball at the New Orleans Marriott on Canal Street.
“To know you survived some of the deadliest areas of the world … to come home and be killed stateside,” said Capt. Kate Vanden Bossche, a Louisiana spokeswoman for the Marine Corps.
Authorities said Monday they were hunting for a suspect and searching for recordings from surveillance cameras that may have captured the confrontation.
New Orleans police said a preliminary investigation indicates that at about 3:30 a.m. Sunday, the 23-year-old Lekosky and his wife were walking along Dauphine Street in the Quarter.
A man allegedly pulled alongside the couple and began shouting inappropriate comments at Lekosky’s wife. She and the heckler launched into some sort of a physical confrontation that Lekosky tried to stop.
“(Lekosky) sustained several stab wounds while trying to break up the fight,” according to the statement released by police.
Officers would not take questions about the stabbing. It is unclear how many people were in the car or exactly what triggered the violence.
Lekosky was assigned to an air station in Louisiana but was born and raised in Corpus Christi.
He was a high school quarterback there, according to his family, and decided not to attend college, joining the service in 2005.
“He fought for our country and came back safe from that,” said his younger sister, Danika Lekosky, who wondered aloud how anyone could attack a service member, especially during a time of war.
She said that he was supposed to have again deployed in November to Afghanistan, but his orders changed.
Lekosky and his wife married quietly a few months ago.
As a result, most family members, including Lekosky’s parents, will meet her for the first time only now, as a military funeral is planned for Corpus Christi, she said.
She said her brother was changed by his military service, and confided that wherever he was, even back in the United States, he felt he had to be constantly on guard to threats around him.
“It was almost like he knew that someday something tragic would happen to him,” she said.

And when he gets to Heaven, To ST. PETER he will say: Another Marine reporting sir, for I have spent my time in hell.
This was written on a wall in a classroom, when I went to Basic Training at MCRD in 1980. SGT Lekosky has joined his fellow Soldier's, Sailor's, Airmen and MARINES, Guarding the Gates of Heaven.
May God be with you SGT Lekosky

More than likely, some non-veteran, bastardly coward did this. It makes you wonder about humanity in this generation. I hope whoever is responsible turns themselves in soon before they are caught.

RIP Sgt Lekosy, May your family find some comfort in knowing you are no longer in harms way. On behalf of my family we send our condolences to his family and new wife/widow. That is a huge tragedy for anyone to suffer - being a mother of a U.S. Marine my heart especially goes to his mother. I will cry with you over your tremendous loss. I pray the person or persons responsible are caught and punished to the fullest extend of the law. God bless our military!

Its a sad world when our military are targets of such violence. I hope that they transfer the investigation to Federal jurisdiction. Why, trials go quicker there and death penalty is usually carried out faster than state venues.

Tragic. Absolutely tragic. What kind of person could hurt an unarmed soldier in uniform?

One of the many reasons I myself do not feel safe in the streets...always on alert...always on guard...this Marine will do whatever it takes to defend myself, my family, and my fellow man. Semper Fi and R.I.P. Sgt. Lekosky.

Hearing stories like this makes my heart heavy. It truly breaks my heart to know how twisted our society has become. Just when I think I have seen or heard it all, something like this happens. :(
There used to be a time when men (no matter how lost) had some morals and ethics deep down inside... Where they would respect other men who sacrificed themselves for our country, for our community and for our families.
My only hope in all this... Is that Louisiana still has a firing squad as that is the only justice that is appropriate for such an act against a service man in uniform.

Semper FIdelis Marine. You were killed being faithful to your family. Even more sad is the fact you were leaving every Marine's birthday party. An additional sad state of affairs, his family will meet his bride only in his death. This is the epitome of selfless service and this young, combat hardened veteran, lost this one battle and despairingly his life.
He will stand with the other Marines guarding the streets and gates of heaven.

This Marine was from my city (corpus christi, tx) and you can bet that we as prior military and law enforcement see this as a senseless crime. Its obvious that the offender was envious of this Marines life that he felt the need to validate his own unaccomplished/low life by insulting the Marines wife to make himself feel better where he then stole a husband, a son, a brother and a Marine, and man's life all in one tragic incident. Rest In Peace.
