KOUNTZE, Texas — A veteran Southeast Texas sheriff’s deputy is dead after his car slammed into trees and caught fire while he was returning from a prisoner transfer.

Authorities say 43-year-old Liberty County Sheriff’s Deputy Odell McDuffie Jr. was dead at the scene of the 1 p.m. accident Monday on Farm Road 770 near Saratoga, about 60 miles northeast of Houston.

Liberty police spokesman Hugh Bishop tells KFDM-TV in Beaumont that McDuffie was returning to Liberty from delivering a juvenile suspect to the Hardin County Detention Center when he apparently overcorrected on a swerve. That sent his patrol car into a grove of trees, where it burst into flames.

Bishop says McDuffie had been a deputy in Liberty County for almost 17 years.
