Off-Duty Cop Foils Robbery While Getting Hair Done
Winston Cox (r.) was arrested Monday morning, two days after he allegedly engaged in a shootout with off-duty cop Feris Jones (l.) (NYC Police Dept)

NEW YORK – The baby-faced gunman sought in the Brooklyn hair salon shootout with an off-duty female cop has been busted, police said Monday.
Winston Cox, 19, was arrested at 1:30 a.m. Monday at a Bedford-Stuyvesant building on Pacific St. after police got a tip about his whereabouts.
He was taken to Woodhull Hospital to be treated for wounds to both hands that he likely sustained from the bullets fired by Officer Feris Jones. The 20-year NYPD veteran opened fire after Cox shot at her in the dramatic Saturday night confrontation inside Sabine’s Hallway beauty salon in Bedford-Stuyvesant.
Jones was getting her hair done in the Franklin Ave. salon when Cox tried to rob the place, police said.
Jones, who is assigned to the NYPD crime lab in Queens, was not injured.
The officer has been lauded for her actions by Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly, PBA President Patrick Lynch and Sabine Bellevue, the salon owner who said she might have been killed had Jones not been there.
“I never been more scared,” Bellevue said. "Thank God the officer was there. I’m just thankful to be alive. If the officer wasn’t there, things could have gone very differently.
“He was fully loaded.”
Witnesses said Cox burst into the salon waving a gun at the four women inside – Jones, Bellevue, another worker and a another customer.
Jones, 50, who gets her hair done at the salon about once a month, rose from her chair, identified herself as a cop and told Cox to drop his weapon.
That’s when he opened fire, witnesses said.
Terrified, Bellevue, her colleague and the other client dropped to the floor, but Jones stood her ground, coolly pulled a gun from her waistband and shot at Cox twice.
Cox ran away, leaving a trail of blood to the nearby Lafayette Gardens housing project, where he lives.
A search of the complex came up empty, but detectives interviewing residents managed to get a name to go with the detailed description Jones provided.
Jones then picked Cox’s picture out of a photo array, sources said.

I think she should have pulled her gun out first, before she identified herself! If it went down like the story said, this sounds like an unnecessary risk. Thank goodness the teen's shots missed! I'm glad it all turned out great.

Kudos to officer Jones. I'm glad that you are okay along with the salon's staff and customers. I think the salon should give you a complimentary one free year of hair care. Just my opinion. God bless you and the NYPD.

MACK2014: Amen to that. I tell my people the same thing. To illustrate the point I ask if the have car, life, home-owners and car insurance then tell them a off-duty gun is the same. In all these cases you hope you never need it but are glad when and if you do. Conversely, you'll be kicking yourself (if you're lucky) when the situation arises and you don't have your gun.

BTW, excellent work, Officer . . . I'm sorry . . . DETECTIVE Jones. Sometimes, it just doesn't pay to be nice and give the moron a second to rethink.

Is the officer okay? As stated earlier, she should have just fired, since he had the gun ih his hand. Either way, great job!

I agree with Jim_Copley. He had no immediate plans to kill somebody until the officer ID's herself, THEN he wants to start shooting. Heck, he might have even gotten away if he'd simply turned an run. But no, he has to turn it into a permanent situation. I'd like to beat his daddy for not beating him.
