Off-Duty Cop Foils Robbery While Getting Hair Done

Winston Cox (r.) was arrested Monday morning, two days after he allegedly engaged in a shootout with off-duty cop Feris Jones (l.) (NYC Police Dept)

NEW YORK – The baby-faced gunman sought in the Brooklyn hair salon shootout with an off-duty female cop has been busted, police said Monday.

Winston Cox, 19, was arrested at 1:30 a.m. Monday at a Bedford-Stuyvesant building on Pacific St. after police got a tip about his whereabouts.

He was taken to Woodhull Hospital to be treated for wounds to both hands that he likely sustained from the bullets fired by Officer Feris Jones. The 20-year NYPD veteran opened fire after Cox shot at her in the dramatic Saturday night confrontation inside Sabine’s Hallway beauty salon in Bedford-Stuyvesant.

Jones was getting her hair done in the Franklin Ave. salon when Cox tried to rob the place, police said.

Jones, who is assigned to the NYPD crime lab in Queens, was not injured.

The officer has been lauded for her actions by Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly, PBA President Patrick Lynch and Sabine Bellevue, the salon owner who said she might have been killed had Jones not been there.

“I never been more scared,” Bellevue said. "Thank God the officer was there. I’m just thankful to be alive. If the officer wasn’t there, things could have gone very differently.

“He was fully loaded.”

Witnesses said Cox burst into the salon waving a gun at the four women inside – Jones, Bellevue, another worker and a another customer.

Jones, 50, who gets her hair done at the salon about once a month, rose from her chair, identified herself as a cop and told Cox to drop his weapon.

That’s when he opened fire, witnesses said.

Terrified, Bellevue, her colleague and the other client dropped to the floor, but Jones stood her ground, coolly pulled a gun from her waistband and shot at Cox twice.

Cox ran away, leaving a trail of blood to the nearby Lafayette Gardens housing project, where he lives.

A search of the complex came up empty, but detectives interviewing residents managed to get a name to go with the detailed description Jones provided.

Jones then picked Cox’s picture out of a photo array, sources said.

"Jones stood her ground, coolly pulled a gun from her waistband and shot at Cox twice." LOL Sounds straight from a movie but regardless of how "coolly" it was pulled, great shot and even better luck that he had a lousy shot.

Promotion time for the "lucky" officer. My bet is that she won't be assigned to the "crime lab in Queens" too much longer!

Fantastic Job! You've gotta really watch out for those baby-faced criminals. We had one here in houston who'd use his face to get people to walk up to his car. So that he and his friends could shoot/rape/abduct them. Beware the babyface.

I'm with Tango913. Although I'm glad Jones took action and surviuved, this could have had a fatal outcome for her. It's a proven fact and I've seen it displayed that a suspect will act much faster than you can react. In our department, and I know most others, warnings are to be used when feasible. This was as much as an infeasible moment that you could come across. You fire first, eliminate the threat, then take further action as needed. STAY ALIVE!
