Teen Who Strangled Brother Gets Life in Prison

Associated Press

October 18, 2010

RISING SUN, Ind. (AP) — An Indiana teenager who admitted he strangled his 10-year-old brother and told police he identified with a TV serial killer was sentenced Friday to life in prison without parole.

Andrew Conley, 18, showed no emotion as a judge sentenced him for the Nov. 28 murder of his brother, Conner. But the teenager wept as he was led out of the courtroom.

Judge James Humphrey could have sentenced Conley to life in prison without parole or to a lesser term of 45 to 65 years. But Humphrey said Conner’s age outweighed any other factors such as mental illness.

“He deserved life, and that’s what he got,” said Dearborn-Ohio County Prosecutor Aaron Negangard.

Defense attorney John Watson said Conley would appeal the sentence.

“He was a 17-year-old boy and there was evidence of mental illness. It seems to me that some of that could be interpreted differently by different folks,” he said.

In chilling video played during a five-day sentencing hearing last month, Conley calmly described how he killed Conner while wrestling with the boy at their home in southern Indiana.

The teenager told police he caught his brother in a choke hold as the child who witnesses said had idolized him fought and pleaded for him to stop. Instead, Conley said he choked Conner until he passed out, then dragged the boy into the kitchen, put on gloves and continued strangling him for at least 20 minutes.

He then loaded his brother’s body into the trunk of his car and drove to visit his girlfriend before dumping his body under some leaves along a park trail.

Conley told psychologists he had been unable to stop and felt as if he were watching the murder from outside himself. According to testimony by police and others, Conley said he had fantasized about killing people since he was in eighth grade and said he wanted to be like the fictional television serial killer Dexter from the Showtime series with the same name. Conley also claimed that he heard voices.

Three experts who examined Conley said he was severely mentally ill, while a fourth who didn’t interview him said he believed Conley showed signs of being a psychopath. None of them believed he hadn’t known what he was doing was wrong.

Humphrey cited that finding repeatedly on Friday in explaining why he chose the life sentence.

Defense attorneys had argued for leniency, saying Conley was mentally ill and had cooperated with investigators.

But Negangard, quoting Conley’s own words to police, has argued the teen was a “monster” who should “rot in jail for the rest of his life.”

He said Conner Conley’s age when he died made the longer sentence appropriate and argued that even a 65-year sentence was too short, since Conley could be released in about 30 years with credit for time served and education while in prison.

Conley expressed remorse for his brother’s death during testimony at his sentencing hearing.

“I am very sorry for murdering my little brother and I will never forget how much he meant to me and so many other people,” he said. “I still have no idea why this happened, but I really wish I did.”

Humphrey said Friday that the statement “seemed superficial and not sincere.”

Conley told police he strangled his brother during what started as a wrestling match at their home in the small Ohio River town of Rising Sun. He wasn’t eligible for the death penalty because he was 17 when he killed his brother.

Conley told others he had fantasized about killing people since he was in eighth grade and he wanted to be like the fictional TV serial killer Dexter. Defense lawyers said he was mentally ill.

A family losses two children. The parents will never be the same again. Right or wrong the family is destroyed. Sad that help did not arrive five years earlier or the parents did not see signs of this horrible malady.

Very soon he will be "claimed as property", publicly humiliated. degraded, and made sure all inmates know he is a queen. Then he will be pimped out for $3.00 a man. That's going to be the state of existence for the POS!

Apparently, some parents are in denial. Should have gotten the help for that sick little Fk and the 10 yr old child would be alive. I thinkd that parents that choose to look from their child having issues should be sent to jail for it. I can only imagine that poor baby idolizing a monster like this. Send him to DIE ALSO and the parents to rot in jail.
